Drowned, They Said
Drowned, They Said: A Metis History | Michael Nelson
1 post | 1 reading | 5 to read
Michael Nelson has written a compelling story of the return to the grave of the his grandfather, Bernhard Anders Nelson, who drowned and was buried on the Batchawana River in 1947. To the author?s generation the circumstances surrounding the death of Bernhard Nelson were largely a mystery. Drowned, They Said is an investigation of that family history and the author?s ancestors, who had long participated in the fur trade, the Red River resistance, and the opening of the Superior area. The story is told in narrative fragments juxtaposed with archival family photographs, historical documents, letters and maps. The fragments comprise differing narrative streams of place and the events that occurred there, the local and extended history of the family, and the personal effort to make sense of that history.

Taking the time to learn more about my #Métis heritage tonight.

shawnmooney Ooh, this sounds amazing, heartbreaking and important! 8y
shawnmooney I am FLUMMOXED that this book, published six years ago, has absolutely no ratings on Goodreads! @Lindy, are you aware of this one? 8y
shawnmooney Hmmn, 1 copy on amazon.ca for $40 and another 6 for sale elsewhere online for $2,000 and up! I guess I understand why no one on the whole of Goodreads has read this book! What a shame... 8y

shawnmooney @Lindy Thanks, Librarian Lindy! I want to order it someday! 8y
shawnmooney @Lindy I've never read the Maria Campbell memoir but once worked with her on an "HIV+ Writers' Voices" reading. 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney Campbell's memoir was an eye-opener for me; I think it broke new ground for lots of people. I am glad to hear that her activism is ongoing. 8y
TamarackTrail @Lindy @shawnmooney I read the first two pages of this last night and had to put it down. It has an incredibly emotional opening. It is written in an interesting juxtaposed narrative style with two distinct voices telling the story. 8y
Lindy @TamarackTrail Fortify your heart before proceeding. 8y
