Post 2 of 2. My other #bookmail Dead Women has clear water damage but the other 2 are in pristine condition. So many books, so little time!

Pickpick

Not the tagged book and not a happy story. This GUTTED me this early Thursday. Isaac Gomez‘s one-woman play tells the stories of the murdered women of Juárez, ages 3-74, brutally and horrifically held. Say their names. Find the ones still missing. Seek justice.

I think this started off strong but just didn't work. The first half is about an American boxer in Juarez. After the boxer's fiancé disappears, the focus changes to a middle aged detective working the case. I wanted it to tie in more to the title since this is a real issue and focus on the crimes against these women. I don't feel it did that. If you do decide to pick this one up, there are some horribly violent scenes against men in jail.

Texreader I would have gotten it for the title for the same reason. Glad to know that's barely touched on. A friend lost 9 family members in a horrible incident in Juarez and so I'm hypersensitive to the crimes there. And I've had a lovely time in Juarez before the massive rise in crime. So sad. 😔 8y
Bookzombie I'm so sorry for you and your friend. That is horrible. I haven't ever been to Juarez and sadly it doesn't sound like a safe place to visit any longer. 8y

This is my tentative #tbr for the readathon. I was hoping to start with a clean slate, but I'm looking forward to finishing up some books and starting some fresh ones. #24in48 @24in48

Some nice work here but some odd choices also. We start off with one character following his journey closely but then a third of the way through he is taken off the chessboard and we're suddenly following a different character. There's even a third introduced but he doesn't get to do anything significant and the whole thing kinda fizzles out. Promises some but mildly under-delivers.
