Educating Alice
Educating Alice: Adventures of a Curious Woman | Alice Steinbach
11 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
Eight years ago, Alice Steinbach, a Pulitzer Prizewinning columnist for the Baltimore Sun, decided to take a break from her life. She took a leave from job, friends, and family for a European journey of self-discovery, and her first book, Without Reservations, was the exquisite result. But once Steinbach had opened the door to a new way of living, she found herself unwilling to return to the old routine. She quit her job and left home again, only this time her objective was to ?nd a way that would allow her, personally and professionally, to combine three of her greatest passions: learning, traveling, and writing. This funny and tender book is the result of her decision to roam around the world as an informal student, taking lessons and courses in such things as French cooking in Paris, Border collie training in Scotland, traditional Japanese arts in Kyoto, architecture and art in Havana. With warmth and wit, Steinbach guides us through the pleasures and perils of discovering how to be a student again. Along the way, she also learns the true value of this second chance at educating herself: the opportunity to connect with and learn from the people she meets on her journey. From the Hardcover edition.

I‘m having a book hangover. After Mercedes Lackey Alice Stein Bach is my favorite writer. This was such a sweet travelogue. Defiantly doing some armchair traveling....

I am heartbroken to discover that Alice Steinbach passed away in 2012. She was so full of life and wit and charm as exemplified by this travel memoir. I would have loved to meet her for a cup of coffee to hear more about her experiences in Paris, Kyoto, Cuba, Scotland, England and Prague. She and her curiosity are an inspiration to me!

minkyb So glad you enjoyed it. Always refreshing to get another perspective. 6y

This was between a pick and a so-so for me. I looked forward to the drawings in many of the chapters representing Alice in her travels. There were a few slower parts that made me want to skim. I learned a lot of interesting facts - Alice sure met some interesting people on her journey! I can‘t wait to see what the rest of my #lmpbc thinks! Mailing out to @minkyb today!! @Kappadeemom @Carolyn11215

minkyb Looking forward to it! 6y

Starting my #lmpbc read! Excited to read along with @minkyb @Carolyn11215 and @Kappadeemom !! Do you want to ship in the order we signed up: Me -> Melanie -> Carolyn -> Mindy ?? Open to other ideas if you don‘t ☺️

Carolyn11215 Sure...so if I understand...I send my book to Mindy by the end of March yes? (edited) 6y
Kappadeemom We mail in the order of the spreadsheet that Suvata emailed us, so @Carolyn11215 you send to me and I mail to Katie. (edited) 6y
kstadt929 @Kappadeemom @Carolyn11215 Every group I‘ve been in we always mixed it up and didn‘t always mail the same way - I don‘t really care how we do it, but wanted everyone to be on the same page. ☺️ (edited) 6y
minkyb This is a new experience for me. Will mail to whatever rotation we decide. I‘m all for the same page @kstadt929 🤗 6y

My interpretation of #whendovescry is a homage to Alice Steinbach. She took flight and soared in her risk taking adventure that involved leaving a career, traveling, meeting new people, writing, cooking, and adventurously embracing this big world. She experienced an awakening and generously shares it. I cried like a baby at the end when I had looked her up and discovered she was taken far too soon by cancer. 🕊#lyricalapril #flystrong #godspeed

Cinfhen Your blurb gave me the goosebumps 💔 (edited) 8y
Jess_Read_This @Cinfhen You know when certain books find you at the point in your life where you need to read them? These two books did that for me. I think that was one reason I was heartbroken when I discovered her writing after she had passed away. I really need to do a reread of them, it's been a few years since I've read them. 8y
