Chapelwood: The Borden Dispatches | Cherie Priest
16 posts | 10 read | 9 to read
From Cherie Priest, the award-winning author of Maplecroft, comes a new tale of Lizzie Bordens continuing war against the cosmic horrors threatening humanity Birmingham, Alabama is infested with malevolence. Prejudice and hatred have consumed the minds and hearts of its populace. A murderer, unimaginatively named Harry the Hacker by the press, has been carving up citizens with a hatchet. And from the church known as Chapelwood, an unholy gospel is being spread by a sect that worships dark gods from beyond the heavens. This darkness calls to Lizzie Borden. It is reminiscent of an evil she had dared hoped was extinguished. The parishioners of Chapelwood plan to sacrifice a young woman to summon beings never meant to share reality with humanity. An apocalypse will follow in their wake which will scorch the earth of all life. Unless she stops it

Birmingham, Alabama has more to worry about than the KKK, a rampaging axe murderer, and corrupt politicians. There‘s a new cult in town, and they‘re on the hunt.

This was more action packed and altogether a smoother read for me. We get the return of Lizzie Borden & Inspector Wolfe, and a bunch of new characters I was equally invested in.

The setting was muggy and gothic, and deliciously creepy. And I am left with even more questions! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I think the first book in the series is the stronger one, but I still rate this a pick. Overall I highly enjoyed it.

I wish I understood better the process of putting together a book. This last sentence of this page is leading me to a specific conclusion, but skipping ahead didn't answer the question... Do publishers/manufacturers do this on purpose? Leave an unanswered question at the bottom of the page to force you to continue reading, or is it just coincidence? Also, should I know the answer to this?

As disappointing as Boneshaker was, I LOVED Maplecroft. I'm very excited to dive into this sequel 🤩🤩😁😁

So I forgot to mention that I started this. I made a trek to Chicago Saturday and this was the book I took with me to occupy my three hour train ride. I must have been more in the mood for this type of story than when I read the first one because I finished it in a couple days and really enjoyed it.

True Americans. That's horseshit of the highest order, and I can't stand it. Sixty years ago they were willing to fight a war to keep from being Americans. Besides, *American* ought to be a good thing, the kind of thing that brings everybody together instead of deciding who's good enough to be one and who isn't.

"It's just another arm of the Klan, is all. No business mixing God and politics, much less God, politics, and hearts full of nothing but hate and fear. I don't want to know what kind of god thinks those fools are worshipping him, when that's all they've got to offer. Hate and fear."

First book haul of the year, from HPB. I have a beautiful hardback edition of sword in the stone but I like to have reader copies of my nice books so I feel comfortable tossing them in my bag and taking them out into the world.

I loved Cherie priest's Cheshire red series so I picked up chapelwood in the hopes that it will be as good as those were. Plus Lizzie Borden. Fun!
