I have to admit that I had never heard the historical account of what occurred at Ebenezer Creek so this fictionalized telling of the event was surprising and moving. I only wish the writing style was more emotionally in depth. While I felt for the characters I didn‘t feel connected to them. It‘s listed as a YA book but read more like middle school. Still, I recommend this important story of betrayal. TW-brutal treatment of slaves but no gore.

History told in narrative form, author Tonya Bolden spins the tale of a story few have likely ever heard. It is not a happy story, but it is one that needs to be told. This is a story I would encourage teachers to look at for their classrooms, to help us ensure that history never repeats itself and that those who suffered are never forgotten.

Prior to reading Crossing Ebenezer Creek I had never heard of the tragedy at Ebenezer Creek during which hundreds of freed slaves drowned trying to escape the confederate cavalry.

Author Tonya Bolden brings the events leading up to the tragedy to the fore in vivid detail. Her haunting prose immediately draws you in. Mariah and Caleb‘s experiences are based on truth, and the rawness in which their stories unfold demands you keep reading.
