Beatrix Potter's Journal
Beatrix Potter's Journal | Beatrix Potter
3 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Between the ages of 15 and 30 Beatrix Potter kept a secret diary written in code. When the code was cracked by Leslie Linder more than 20 years after her death, the diary revealed a remarkable picture of upper middle-class life in late Victorian Britain. The original diaries run to over 200,000 words so for this edition Glen Cavaliero has made a careful selection of complete entries and excerpts which provide an illuminating insight into the personality and inspiration of one of the world's best loved children's authors.

I found myself spontaneously watching this documentary (lower right) tonight on PBS and it was the most charming thing I've seen in ages. It's inspired me to curl up in bed and read bits from Potter's journal. ❤

DebinHawaii I wish our PBS channel here played the same things as other places. They do some of the same bigger programs & series but not always. 😒 Tonight was all country music. I would have loved this. I'll keep my eye out for it. 8y

LeahBergen @quirkyreader She's wonderful. 8y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Oh, do try to hunt it down for a watch. It does a good job discussing how her books came to be AND has lots of cute little animals in it. It would be lovely family viewing. 8y
saresmoore @LeahBergen Sounds perfect. I will look for it! 8y
DeborahSmall Did she mention her time in Dunkeld in Scotland? They have a little Museum and beautiful grounds. My sisters house only a few miles away. I loved Beatrix Potter when I was younger. I'd love Sophie to have an interest 8y
LeahBergen @DeborahSmall Yes! They go there and Routledge sits where Beatrix penned the Peter Rabbit letters. They also show the fungi paintings she did while there. It was wonderful. 😀 8y
DeborahSmall @LeahBergen Aww I have to find this show! I love Dunkeld and the Beatrix Potter Gardens, they're beautiful, with lots of carved wooden characters around the walk ways. My sister is living in Edinburgh and renting her house out as she's going through a divorce. So I don't know when we'll get back up to visit. #selfishbitch lol 8y
LeahBergen @DeborahSmall Well, she bloody well better move to another place with literary attractions! 😂 8y
DeborahSmall @LeahBergen she's in Edinburgh so can't complain too much lol 8y

Happy #NationalBookLoversDay! Somewhere in here is Beatrix Potter's journal, which is excellent time travel reading for upper middle class life in the late 1800s. From ages 15 to 30 she wrote it in a code of her own devising, as recording her thoughts on her life, art and politics was a transgressive act in her day.

MrBook 😻👍🏻 8y
