Murder in Mayfair: An Atlas Catesby Mystery
Murder in Mayfair: An Atlas Catesby Mystery | D M Quincy
4 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
In 1810, Atlas Catesby, a brilliant adventurer and youngest son of a baron, is anxious to resume his world travels after a carriage accident left him injured in London. But his plans are derailed when, passing through a country village, he discovers a helpless woman being auctioned off to the highest bidder--by her husband. In order to save her from being violated by another potential buyer, Atlas purchases the lady, Lilliana, on the spot to set her free. But Lilliana, desperate to be with her young sons and knowing the laws of England give a father all parental rights, refuses to be rescued--until weeks later when her husband is murdered and Atlas is the only one who can help clear her name of the crime. Fortunately, Atlas is a master at solving complicated puzzles, both with games and the intricacies of human motivation, and finds himself uniquely suited to the task, despite the personal peril it may put him in. But soon Altas learns the dead man had many secrets--and more than a few enemies willing to kill to keep them quiet--in Murder in Mayfair, the first in a new historical mystery series by D. M. Quincy.

A couple of weeks back, I won this gorgeous book from Crooked Lane Books, an independent publisher of mystery, suspense, and crime fiction based out of NYC.

They don't have a litsy account but go check them out on Instagram!

I'm super excited to dig into this, but in the meantime, look at how pretty it is! (And now I'm craving doughnuts again. 😂)

I thought the set-up on this book was a little far-fetched but a quick search revealed that wife sales were indeed a thing in #Regency #England. #LearnSomethingNewEveryDay

The tone was a little too serious/angsty for me, but the protagonist's extended family promises some interesting future books and the history is intriguing.

Favorite character: protagonist's mathematician sister.

You know you're a bookworm when you make a special trip to the library at 8:30 pm to pick up your library hold that just came in.

This is a historical mystery set in the Regency.

I really wanted to like this book, a mashup of a mystery and a Regency romance. Unfortunately it was just too light in both regards. The author has a good idea, but the characters seem stock and the situations unbelievable.
