The Female Eunuch
The Female Eunuch | Germaine Greer
The publication of Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch in 1970 was a landmark event, raising eyebrows and ire while creating a shock wave of recognition in women around the world with its steadfast assertion that sexual liberation is the key to women's liberation. Today, Greer's searing examination of the oppression of women in contemporary society is both an important historical record of where we've been and a shockingly relevant treatise on what still remains to be achieved.

I just don‘t think that The Female Eunuch has any value anymore. It‘s not old enough, or well-written enough, to have the historical status and respect afforded to suffragette writing. It‘s been too thoroughly debunked and overwritten to stand alongside later works of feminism. It‘s out of date: scientifically, socially, and legally. Redwritinghood Also, that cover is awful. 4y
keepingupwiththepenguins @Redwritinghood Hahahaha funnily enough, Facebook actually prevented me from posting a photo of it with my review, because apparently their automatic sensor thingy detected that it contained offensive material. 4y

Listened to the iconic Germaine Greer at #JaipurLiteratureFestival2019 today. I haven't read any of her books, so off i went and bought one of her most significant works, The Female Eunuch. She is quite a character and some of her opinions could be debatable (which is what's great about difference of opinions right?!), but what a FUN persona to listen to. So amusing!

TrishB Yes, great to listen to, definitely don‘t always agree! 6y
batsy I've not read her either! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds 😂😂😂 You had a MUCH better seat than me!!!! We were squished off to an edge. Did you get her to sign for you? 6y

batsy Thank you for your sweet offer ❤️ But pls don't worry, I've a friend who's an academic with a whole shelf of feminist classics/theory that I can borrow from when needed 😉 6y
Tanisha_A @batsy Aha! Okay, sounds good! :) 6y
Libby1 @Tanisha_A and @GlassAsDiamonds - JLF is coming to Belfast this June! I can‘t believe it. If I can arrange child care I would love to volunteer. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Libby1 OMG !!! It‘s worth it!!!! (Well... I‘m not sure how hard they‘d work you as a volunteer, I‘d suspect HARD 😂😂😂😂 but it‘s *AMAZING*!!!) 6y

Today... I had a conversation with Germaine Greer... I am STILL reeling!!! She‘s 80 next year and remains on fire and just brilliant. Completely blunt, tell it like it is, inhabiting the nuance and messiness of the details and bowing to no one. She would not retract statements she stood behind, she got annoyed with questioners ignoring details and said when she didn‘t know something or it was outside her wheel house. This session was an honour.

#PublishedInThe1970s #JubilantJuly

Published in 1970, the year before I was born, this landmark book in the history of feminism was hugely influential, even though I've never read it!

My mum was and is a huge fan of Greer and I grew up hearing about this book and the author from her.

My mum bought me this copy a few years ago because I'd asked to borrow hers and she couldn't find it.

It remains on my #TBR shelves. I will get to it...👊
