A Cotswold Killing
A Cotswold Killing | Rebecca Tope
4 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
Duntisbourne Abbots is a timeless and quintessentially English village nestled in the fertile hills of the Cotswolds in peaceful Gloucestershire. Recently widowed Thea Osbourne fears three weeks house-sitting there may prove a little dull, but her first night's sleep at Brook View is broken by a piercing scream. She assures herself it was only a fox and nothing more sinister, but then a body turns up... When Joel Jennison is found slaughtered in the same field where his brother's corpse had lain ten weeks previously, a whole community falls under suspicion. As a forty-something woman with no experience of detective work, she knows she shouldn't get involved, but in questioning neighbours Thea uncovers more tragedy and intrigue than she thought possible.

I love a cozy mystery, but this one, not so much. Thea is house sitting and after only one night on the property, she finds a body. And there ends the excitement. The rest of the book consists of Thea questioning local residents and then having repetitive internal dialogue about what they said. She has a dog, which at first is sweet, but then every time she leaves the house she has to weigh the pros and cons of bringing the dog or not.

I didn‘t like this that much. It wasn‘t cozy at all, I never warmed up with the main character - or any character at all. The whole thing with her being a widow felt a bit too constructed.

Pickpick

On the first night of her first engagement as a house sitter, Thea hears a scream outside. The next day she finds a body in the garden.

This felt more plausible than most amateur 'tec cozies, with a good awareness of how difficult it can be to understand people's relationships when you come into a new community and aren't aware of their histories.

Trying out this 'cozy mystery' series on my ereader coz it's lighter & easier to hold ATM. I was feeling so horrible this morning that I rang the mother-in-law & begged her to make me butterfly cream cupcakes to cheer me up. She turned up an hour&half later with them, plus some passionfruit cakes as well, plus made me a cup of coffee! She's the best woman on earth I think!👩🏻‍🍳🍰☕️#cozymystery
