A government special agent known only as the Signalman gets off a train on a stunningly hot morning in Winslow, Arizona. Later that day he meets a woman in a diner to exchange information about an event that happened a week earlier for which neither has an explanation, but which haunts the Signalman. In a ranch house near the shore of the Salton Sea a cult leader gathers up the weak and susceptible -- the Children of the Next Level -- and offers them something to believe in and a chance for transcendence. The future is coming and they will help to usher it in.A day after the events at the ranch house which disturbed the Signalman so deeply that he and his government sought out help from 'other' sources, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory abruptly loses contact with NASA's interplanetary probe New Horizons. Something out beyond the orbit of Pluto has made contact. And a woman floating outside of time looks to the future and the past for answers to what can save humanity.Agents of Dreamland is a new Lovecraftian horror novella from award-winning author Caitlin R. Kiernan.

A novella packed with aliens, cults, and Lovecraftian beings. Kiernan excels at weird fiction. This novella is part of the Tinfoil Dossier series, but can be read as a standalone.

A short #novella that is a part of a #series but works as a #standalone.

Lovecraftian horrors. Aliens. Cults. Time travel. Fungi growing out of people (reminiscent of The Last of Us TV show which I‘m watching right now and loving, so, yeah). Nonlinear narration. Characters of whom we know nothing beyond the superficial, but who are—because of that—mysterious and intriguing.

Confusing at times, but overall good fun.

3.5/5

A novella that is just the right length and does not disappoint in the noir/sci-fi department. Kiernan is great at setting atmosphere in few words. And it includes a nightmarish use of The World tarot card! The overuse of swearing is honestly distracting, like she‘s going for Tarantino but lacks his style.

Annie1215 I‘m intrigued! I also feel the need to break out my tarot cards lol 4y

A tense Cthulhu-thriller akin to X-Files.

Great weird fiction novella about a government agent known as the Signalman dealing with the fallout of a cult standoff gone bad. Super creepy imagery and great atmospheric writing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nominated for Superior Achievement in Long Fiction for the 2017 #bramstokerawards. I love Caitlin Kiernan. This haunting story of a doomsday cult investigation goes by way too quickly and leaves me wishing it were longer. Great cosmic horror.

Holy buckets was this good. Stylish and sinister, and similar in concept to The Girl With All the Gifts.

vivastory I really dug this one 7y
Ingerella This is only $3.99 fir Kindle right now so I went ahead and grabbed it. Sounds interesting! 7y

I‘ve finally gotten around to taking a picture of my Black Friday #BookOutlet order. It Ended Badly is a Christmas present for a friend and I‘ve read The Serpent King, but I wanted a physical copy. The rest are all new reads!

I‘m trying to keep my December book purchases to a minimum, but Book Outlet usually has a Boxing Day sale so I‘ll need to have some self control - something I don‘t typically have when it comes to books. 😂

Thumbs up for another great Tor novella! This was a great quick, creepy read with a complex plot featuring secret agents and a cult mass suicide. Very excited to read more from this author. #ripxii #littensdressedinblood

Dinner break! My stomach's been off this week, so I took myself out for pho. This is my fourth Tor.com novella for the #7in7readathon. I've had a stack of them to get to, and this has been the perfect reason to do so! I'm loving what Tor.com is doing with these.

moranadatter I hope you feel better soon! 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto Every single time I feel icky my boyfriend insists pho is the answer. It doesn't even matter what the sickness is. 😂😂 I hope the magical pho cures you and you feel better soon. 💚 7y

aeeklund @moranadatter Thank you so much!! The pho definitely helped! 7y
aeeklund @Ashley_Nicoletto Magical pho for the win! It's the at-work version of chicken noodle soup for me (since I can't have wheat). If I have colds, I usually add spices to help burn out the sinus stuff. 7y
JennyReadsBooks @aeeklund Yes please! And, someday, we still have our various movie marathons to go through (Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, etc). And games? 7y

That... was a lot bleaker than I expected. And I have so many questions. (Review copy.)

shanaqui Wait. It's Lovecraft references again? Why are people so in love with that lately, especially Tor authors? 8y
Clare-Dragonfly Lovecraft references were added a while back to the list of things that make me go "eh." ? 8y
