The Question of Red
The Question of Red | Laksmi Pamuntjak
9 posts | 7 read | 13 to read
In this sweeping saga of love, loss, revolution, and the resilience of the human spirit, Amba must find the courage to forge her own path. Amba was named after a tragic figure in Indonesian mythology, and she spends her lifetime trying to invent a story she can call her own. When she meets two suitors who fit perfectly into her namesake s myth, Amba cannot help but feel that fate is teasing her. Salwa, respectful to a fault, pledges to honor and protect Amba, no matter what. Bhisma, a sophisticated, European-trained doctor, offers her sensual pleasures and a world of ideas. But military coups and religious disputes make 1960s Indonesia a place of uncertainty, and the chaos strengthens Amba s pursuit of freedom. The more Amba does to claim her own story, the better she understands her inextricable bonds to history, myth, and love."

I've seen others make comments about problems with the translation. I can't say there was anything in this regard that really stuck out to me. I know nothing about the politics, history, or mythology of Indonesia, so I'm sure I do not fully appreciate the political statement the author may be trying to convey. With that said, I did enjoy this historical fiction work and am interested in learning more.

cherinium @BarbaraTheBibliophage I picked it up a couple years ago through Amazon's #ReadTheWorld promotion. I'm desperately trying to meet my challenge prompts with the books I already own, so this one definitely fit the bill. 4y

This, from a translated work. As a monolingual reader, I have often thought about this while reading translated works. The only book I have ever successfully read in its original language is The Little Prince, but that was years ago. I'm sure I couldn't do it today. 😥

How many languages are YOU able to read? ❓❓❓❓❓

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Just English - I did a few years of French in high school but I‘m not fluent enough to do more than successfully find my way around the Louvre. 5y
Scochrane26 In French class, we read The Stranger and Little Prince, but I can‘t read in French now. 5y

All technicalities aside this book was a great read. One that I would definitely recommend to anyone who can get past the choppy writing style of the translated work.

8little_paws I ultimately liked this as well. I suspect the translation did not do it justice. 6y
BeansPage @8little_paws I suspect the same. But overall it was a very good read. 6y

So, this is one of those multi decade books. The 1960s section was really interesting but the modern stuff i'm not convinced worked. But there's a really interesting story about political unrest in Indonesia here, and worth a look. It took me a while to get into it but i'm glad I didn't DNF.

I've tried and tried, I've gotten a little over halfway, and these characters are just annoying me now. I can't any more.

Passing on some interesting news! Amazon has 9 free ebooks in translation you can get thru 4/23. They all look really interesting but I haven‘t heard of any of them?
