I didn‘t notice how illogical the Rumplestiltskin tale was until Vivian Vande Velde pointed it out in her introduction to her 6 retellings in this delightful little volume. Each one twists the original not only to make motives more logical but to give each a fairytale tweak. Loved this short ramble through a classic retold. Six times! A must for any fairytale freak.

Traditional Rumpelstiltskin tale sounds rather illogical. What's the reason behind all the schemes? Perhaps Rumpelstiltskin wanted to taste a human child, or maybe to raise as a child? Maybe there was no Rumpel at all but a greedy miller's daughter, or a clever one but unfortunate enough to meet a greedy king.
