There is something about #AmericanKids -as in US American teenagers- that my European mind has problems wrapping itself around. In films as much as with contemporary YA (vampire/romance) novels set in the US. The culture strikes me as odd. I can't even say which part exactly, I just keep tutting and shaking my head and wondering why they act like that. US teenagers in novels seem to be walking stereotypes.

AmandaL That is a really interesting observation. I think it has something to do with the hyper-consumer culture and barrage of media and advertising imagery we're exposed to from birth. It's influence supersedes education, family, region. I have teenage children, and it seems like even the counter-culture has been commodified and packaged for them. 8y
Billypar So much also gets dumbed down and oversimplified, especially in Hollywood portrayals, but probably in certain books too. Romantic drama is a big thing with this age group but it's definitely not the only interesting thing going on with American teens. 8y
julesG @AmandaL @Billypar Thanks for your replies. I think a lot of factors influence these stereotypical depictions, oversimplification and consumer culture sound like good reasons. But I am sure, where I to read books about German teenagers (or watch films), there would also be stereotypical behaviour. 8y
