Vampires
Vampires: Encounters with the Undead | David J. Skal
6 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
The most wide-ranging collection of vampire tales ever features two centuries of spine-tingling writing, from John Polidori to Robert Block, Alexis Tolstoy to Bram Stoker, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Henry Kuttner. Every page of Vampires features a column of commentary by the editor, expanding upon the stories and exploring the evolution of the vampire mystique in folklore, literature, and popular culture. More than 200 beautifully rendered black-and-white images of vintage engravings, film posters, and popular artifacts make this big book the living end of vampire fact, fiction, and lore.

@StayCurious #Scarathlon2020 🎃
#TeamSlaughter @Clwojick (26p noted)

1 hour #CYOReadathon stacked with #October8in2 1/8 🦇 This is a reread of the Sherlock Holmes short story, 'The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire'. -- Finding myself interested again in this Vampires history book, brings up a lot more I missed about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's supernatural interests 👻🔍 uncommon mystery tales I'm eager to seek out now! (Extras add to my 1st hour)

Clwojick Way to go! 👏🏻👏🏻🎃 5y

A fun, educational time. Some stories are obviously better than others but only a couple real stinkers. I absolutely love The Family of the Vourdalak and have no idea why it hasn't been optioned for a movie. That said, this book took me like 3 months to read for some reason, and I'm ECSTATIC to be done and move onto something non-vampire.

Mistermandolin Is it non-fiction? 5y
DarkPizza @Mistermandolin fiction and non-fiction! It's an examination of the vampire mythos through history, so it includes lots of vampire stories, arranged chronologically, as well as several non-fiction essays and annotations from the editor throughout. 5y
Mistermandolin @DarkPizza It sounds fantastic. I will check it out! 5y

Library sale find.

Do I normally go for vampire books? No.
Am I going to pass up this giant book in great condition that actually looks interesting and is only $1? Nope.

As a vampire classics fan, I've really only read one, as the first The Vampire Chronicles novel. 🙀 Also as I'm aware of 'Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis' now making the 12th. I'll sure get scheduled on the series again! - A Game of Thrones is my winter devotion. I should really make The Vampire Chronicles a summer goal for each year.

Gosh 😸 this was 10 years ago when I started check marking the book, and I'll resume back to it. Now I'll have to find where I packed my Vampire Hunter D books. I bought the first 6 at the time. The stories and illustrations are awesomely cool! 🦇🗡

Only a #slowread as a long catalogued read, reminding me to get back to Anne Rice. My new copy at the time was stubbornly aged, used as a mouse pad with an unfortunate desk set-up. 😂 Not terrible, for the withered spidery look. This was the early 2000s, before the Twilight books make a new take on vampire evolution. Although I've yet to read 'The Hunger', David Bowie in that film led me to the music of Bauhaus. 🦇

MaleficentBookDragon Nice Magic card. Loved the Hunger movie. The book too. 8y
Dan_SpiderCrafts @MaleficentTheBookDragon Thanks 😊 I managed to find The Last Vampire at a used book shop, which should have me seeking out The Hunger to get started on them. 8y
