How the Girl Guides Won the War
How the Girl Guides Won the War | Janie Hampton
2 posts | 1 read
Mention Girl Guides to any woman and the reaction will be strong. They either loved them or hated them; they were either proud to wear their uniform or refused to join. Whatever their feelings, most former Guides retain strong memories of their experiences. All too often regarded merely in terms of biscuit sales and sing-songs, hardly anybody is aware of the massive impact that the Guides had on gender equality and, more fundamentally, the outcome of the Second World War. In this eye-opening history, Janie Hampton explores how the Guides' work was crucial to Britain's victory. When the Blitz broke out, the Guides knew what to do. They kept up morale in bomb shelters, demonstrating 'blitz cooking' with emergency ovens made from the bricks of bombed houses at the request of the Ministry of Food. They grew food on their company allotments and knitted for the entire country. The embodiment of the Home Front spirit, they dug shelters, provided crucial First Aid, and also assisted the millions of children who were forced to flee their city homes to safer places in the country. It is difficult to imagine what the war effort would have looked like without the Guides. Full of fond and funny anecdotes and rich social history, HOW THE GIRL GUIDES WON THE WAR takes us on the journey of one of the twentieth century's most extraordinary movements.

My favorite motto when it comes to books: Treat Yo' Self. Forgot I ordered this but glad it's on the shelf now. #bookmail Speaking of #treatyoself I've been on the Folio Society website and there are some reasonably priced books I would love to own! Maybe next month. This month's budget is shot to pieces. 😁

vivastory I wholeheartedly agree with your motto! 7y
ReadingEnvy What is "reasonably priced" for Folio Society? I was on the site and Ulysses was $195! Are they magical?!? 7y
EvieBee @vivastory We are kindred spirits! ❤️ 7y

Melissa_J I also live by the treat yo self motto when it comes to books 😊 Also, as a former Girl Guide I'll be stacking this book 👍🏻 7y
EvieBee @ReadingEnvy Haha! Noooo! I was looking at the ones I could afford which were between $35-$60. The ones I actually LOVE are well over $100 so I'll just have to continue coveting those from a distance. 7y
EvieBee @Melissa_J Ooh, nice! 7y
HardcoverHearts Folio Society books are amazing. I wouldn't let myself buy them until this year. I bought the Dune that I had been coveting for so many years. I'm going to London next week and their bookstore is on my list of places to go! 😱 7y
EvieBee @HardcoverHearts So they ARE magical! If I could curtail buying as many books as I do and save up for books I love...it would probably be an even exchange. I've been using my library more so this may work! 7y
ReadingEnvy @EvieBee84 Maybe for books I know I want to keep forever then, favorites? Until I'm independently wealthy? ;) 7y
ReadingEnvy @HardcoverHearts oh I do hope you report back after your visit! 7y
HardcoverHearts And they do have some sales from time to time. The Dune I bought was bundled with The Man From the High Castle by Phillip K. Dick so it was a deal that I couldn't miss. And I shop in Friends of the Library sales and almost passed out once when I found a Folio Society edition of Brideshead Revisited! And it was only $8. So I have those 3 + Rebecca by Daphne du Maurice and The Moving Toyshop by Edmund Crispin. Can't wait to see what's in the shop! 7y
Cspen113 Love that mug!! 7y
batsy That's my motto too, which is why I'm in trouble, in many ways 😂 7y
EvieBee @Cspen113 Thank you, Crystal! 7y
EvieBee @batsy Lol, I know exactly what you mean. 7y
minkyb I had never ordered a folio book but I gave my daughter one as a holiday gift which meant I was eligible for their yearly sale around January I think. You can really pick up some bargains with access to that sale! 7y
EvieBee @minkyb Really?! I had no idea! Thank you for letting me know. 7y

I wish that I had thought to make this post for #shepersisted, but I'm making it now anyways! I volunteer as a Sparks Guider for my local Girl Guides unit. I love empowering and inspiring the 5-7 year old girls that I volunteer with. #girlguides
