Hamlet Globe to Globe
Hamlet Globe to Globe | Dominic Dromgoole
15 posts | 4 read | 15 to read
Two years. 193,000 miles. 190 countries. One play. For the 450th anniversary of Shakespeares birth the Globe Theatre undertook an unparalleled journey, to take Hamlet to every country on the planet, to share this beloved play with the entire world. The tour was the brainchild of Dominic Dromgoole, artistic director of the Globe, and in Hamlet Globe to Globe, Dromgoole takes readers along with him. From performing in sweltering deserts, ice-cold cathedrals, and heaving marketplaces, and despite food poisoning in Mexico, the threat of ambush in Somaliland, an Ebola epidemic in West Africa and political upheaval in Ukraine, the Globes players pushed on. Dromgoole shows us the world through the prism of Shakespearewhat the Danish prince means to the people of Sudan, the effect of Ophelia on the citizens of Costa Rica, and how a sixteenth-century play can touch the lives of Syrian refugees. And thanks to this incredible undertaking, Dromgoole uses the world to glean new insight into this masterpiece, exploring the plays history, its meaning, and its pleasures. Hamlet Globe to Globe is a highly enjoyable book about an unprecedented theatrical adventure.

A little Sunday night Shakespeare for the soul. Not quite halfway through the tagged book yet, and still making up my mind about it, but there's no doubt that the project it chronicles - a two-year, worldwide tour performing Hamlet in every country on earth- is grand, audacious, and worth learning more about. #CurrentlyReading

A touring company from the Globe Theatre in London goes on the ultimate tour: 2 years travelling round the world in an attempt to put on a performance of Hamlet in every country.

I was expecting more of a travelogue but it turned out to be a series of reflections on the play with traveller's tales and reflections on people and places mixed in. And once I'd mentally shifted gears, it worked very well.

I‘ve been a bit absent the last few days, I haven‘t rly been reading. The covid19 situation is awful for everyone and yesterday they had to close my beautiful workplace the Globe. Ppl are having to make much bigger sacrifices but this really hurt me. It‘s the first London theatre I ever went to and it made me the nerd I am today. I‘ve never asked for money on the internet before but if anyone is able to donate I‘ll drop the link in comments

JillR Oh I‘m so sorry to hear this. We were due to visit London over Easter and were planning to visit The Globe. The kids surprised us by being super excited to see their first Shakespeare play. Obviously the whole trip is cancelled now but we‘ll be rearranging as soon as we‘re able. Crazy times. Stay safe x 5y
CarolynM So sorry to hear this. I hope there will be some government support in the future for such an important cultural icon. 5y

I thought this was going to be more a travel a book, but I was very happy to find it more a book of theater and a book about Hamlet. There are plenty of travel stories, but Dromgoole uses a lot of them to discuss theater and the play. #shakespeare

RadicalReader @WanderingBookaneer what is this challenge about? 7y
WanderingBookaneer @RadicalReader : Check out the Goodreads Group. There is one task per week. 7y
emilyesears I‘ve done it in 2015, 2016, and 2017. 2017 was the first year I actually completed all 52 prompts though. I‘m signed up to do 2018, but I‘m not expecting to finish it as there are several prompts I don‘t care about. I like it because there‘s a centralized place for discussion. My strategy is to fill in prompts with books already on my TBR and then see if I pick anything up throughout the year that meets the remaining ones. 7y
Gezemice I have been in this group since 2015. It is a really fun, active group with great moderators. One of the most fun aspect is that the group members suggest the categories and people vote on them. Everyone has their own "plan" thread that others can comment on. I use it to keep track of my reading. This is the group I enjoyed most on Goodreads. @emilyesears @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @WanderingBookaneer And yes, I am doing it in 2018. (edited) 7y

Dominic Dromgoole's account of the programme by the Globe Theatre to perform Hamlet in every country of the world within 2 years is both entertaining and informative. In addition to the trials and tribulations of the prophecy, he offers sharp insights into the historical context and literary complexities of the play.
