Ce que murmurent les collines. Nouvelles rwandaises | Scholastique Mukasonga
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read

About to start 1 of the few books by Scholastique Mukasonga I haven't read yet. They're short stories & I expect most of them will be set in #Rwanda but won't be about the genocide, which is good because as important as the genocide is, Rwanda should not be reduced to it.

Who knows anything about Rwanda that is not related to the genocide? This is a great little volume of short stories set in Rwanda that have absolutely nothing to do with any gruesome murders or anything like that, and that comes with some explanatory notes. It still made me feel like I should read up on that part of Rwanda's history... But ill get to that after reading another book by Mukasonga 😊

8little_paws Can you help me and tell me what the title is in English, so I can see if I can find an English edition? 8y
tricours @8little_paws it doesn't seem to have been translated ? it would be "The murmurs of the hills" (literally "What the hills murmur"). Some of her other books have been translated though: http://scholastiquemukasonga.net/en/category/books/ 8y
8little_paws Thank you for the info!! 😊 8y
DeborahSmall Was just going to ask the same as @8little_paws Thanks! 8y
Kimzey I've hosted a number of Rwandan military officers and their families. I hope to visit them sometime. Also, want to see the mountain gorillas! I'm told it's a beautiful country. 8y

There's something so profoundly different about francophone postcolonial literature (regardless of country - this is the first Rwandan book I've ever read) and all the other African literature I've ever read. Do I like the postcolonial ones better because they feel more French than French literature from France, whereas more genuinely regional literature often remind me of Norse sagas in their sparseness? 😶

LauraBeth What does Walter think? 8y
tricours @LauraBeth he just wants to bite me, the book, the sofa and everything else 😕 Not sure how we ended up with a rodent. 8y
Simona But it's cute little rodent 😍 8y
