Folklore of the Scottish Highlands
Folklore of the Scottish Highlands | Anne Ross
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
The folklore of the Scottish Highlands is unique and very much alive. Anne Ross is a Gaelic-speaking scholar and archaeologist who has lived and worked in crofting communities, which has enabled her to collect information firsthand and assess the veracity of material already published. In this substantially revised edition of a classic work first published 25 years ago, she portrays the beliefs and customs of Scottish Gaelic society, including seasonal customs deriving from Celtic festivals, the famous waulking songs, the Highland tradition of seers and second sight, omens and taboos, chilling experiences of witchcraft, and rituals associated with birth and death.

Day 3 of our Scottish adventure! It‘s deliciously remote, but I can ferret out a bookshop! Found this gem in a charming little village booksale today.

umbrellagirl Where are you? 6y
Mitch @umbrellagirl Hi. We‘re in Durness - furthest westerly point on the northern Scottish coast. It‘s amazing! Fallen in love with the place. 😍 6y
umbrellagirl @Mitch I can see why. Not that I‘m biased or anything. 6y

Worth a shot, right? My Husband and I always talk about renewing our vows in Scotland with our Daughters beside us and then have a relaxing vacation. I would LOVE to go back to Scotland because I miss it SO much! Just casual reading on a Highland hillside ❤️

Day 7: #mylocallibrary #riotgrams I don't visit my local library often, mostly because I work in a different city and my work hours are long. This is the last book I borrowed. On another note, my local library displayed my paintings when I was in high school. 🎨

With subject matter this rich and vibrant, this book should not have been nearly as dry as it was.
