Early Morning
Early Morning: Remembering My Father, William Stafford | Kim Stafford
7 posts | 4 to read
A prolific writer, famous pacifist, respected teacher, and literary mentor to many, William Stafford is one of the great American poets of the 20th century. His first major collection--Traveling through the Dark--won the National Book Award. William Stafford published more than sixty-five volumes of poetry and prose and was Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress--a position now know as the Poet Laureate. Before William Stafford's death in 1993, he gave his son Kim the greatest gift and challenge: to be his literary executor. In Early Morning, Kim creates an intimate portrait of a father and son who shared many passions: archery, photography, carpentry, and finally, writing itself. But Kim also confronts the great paradox at the center of William Stafford's life. The public man, the poet who was always communicating with warmth and feeling--even with strangers--was capable of profound, and often painful silence within the family. By piecing together a collage of his personal and family memories, and sifting through thousands of pages, of his father's daily writing and poems, Kim illuminates a fascinating and richly lived life.

There's nothing else quite like those stolen reading moments in the early morning when the whole house is still asleep 😌

Just pass 3 a.m. on the East coast. Time for an early morning #HumpDayPost!

1) & 2) A doll & handmade (not by me) hat for my daughter.
3) The Office. Though my work wife has been trying (albeit unsuccessfully) to convince me to watch This Is Us...
4) Dollar Store finds (like quirky books/accessories) or extra unused notebooks I‘ve had for far too long
5) All the Light We Cannot See, The Blind Assassin, Britt-Marie was Here, The Dollhouse

I went to bed at midnight, thinking I'd have a better chance of sleeping there than on the couch. I read for awhile, fell asleep around 1, and woke up before 6. WTF?!? Going to try and not Litsy for awhile to see if I can sleep. 5 hours is not enough!

Aseleener I often have this problem too. Woke up at 5:20 this morning. Ugh! 8y
LauraBrook @AmyG @Booksandcooks @PurpleyPumpkin @Aseleener I knew this would be the place where people would have the same issue! I ended up reading for a bit and then I hardcore wiped out for 4 hours. I'm still a little out of it, honestly. 😳 Fingers crossed we all get some excellent sleep tonight! 8y
Zelma This seems to be my life lately. I can't sleep until the wee hours of the morning, MIL wakes me up a few times and then I sleep really late to try to catch up. Rinse, repeat. Ugh. 8y
LauraBrook @Zelma rinse, repeat, ugh, is right! Sorry you're in the same 🚣. 8y

Ericmanciniwriter Yes! Thanks for including me in this. Now we just need to enact my plan to replace the audio in airport and bar televisions with audiobook narrations. 8y
saresmoore @Eamann Brilliant! I see a guerilla Litsy force enacting this plan. I think we should also install Little Free Libraries at all the terminals. 8y
Ericmanciniwriter Yes- literally ANYTHING except people on the news yelling nonsense at each other 8y
valeriegeary Mmmmm, lovely lovely. Thank you! 8y
saresmoore @valeriegeary Kim Stafford is an OR local. I thought you might appreciate it. 😊 8y

This poem is from a collection called The Flavor of Unity: Post-Election Poems (Portland, Oregon: Little Infinities, 2017).

From the preface: "Ideals I had known as bedrock for our beloved country—the integrity of fact, a habit for truth, the honorable treatment of fellow citizens, and a growing affection for our fragile Earth—all went under threat. I felt pulled to testify for our better nature as a nation..."

Suet624 Ohhh....I particularly like the last 2 lines. It's so hard to get there when you hurt so much over what's going on, but I'll try. Thanks for sharing, Sara. 8y

saresmoore @RachelO Absolutely! I ordered it via a site called Lulu that does self-publishing. It's affordable! 8y
saresmoore @Suet624 I thought you would appreciate it. I've been struggling to be compassionate lately, but this is such a good reminder. Actually, this whole collection is amazing. I'm meting it out for daily doses of healing & encouragement. 8y
saresmoore @SharonGoforth @RachelO @Suet624 @mklong The book tagged is a different one by Kim Stafford, just FYI. This little poem collection is not in the Litsy database, as it isn't widely available. http://www.lulu.com/shop/kim-stafford/the-flavor-of-unity-second-edition/paperba... 8y

This morning I've been sharing some poems by Kim Stafford, son of the great William Stafford. If you want to share here's the credit line: Reprinted with permission of the author from The Flavor of Unity: Post-Election Poems by Kim Stafford (Portland, Oregon: Little Infinities, 2017). The collection isn't on Litsy because it's not for sale, so I'm linking to another one of his titles.
