“In former times the Morocco rascals used to coast along the Spanish Main in their boats till a safe opportunity seemed to present itself, and then dart in and capture a Spanish village and carry off all the pretty women they could find. It was a pleasant business, and was very popular.”
😲😱😲

Velvetfur Ooer! I'm sure it wasn't a 'pleasant business' for the women who were captured! 😲 6y

Day 5 of #requiredreadingredo is tough, as I don't like any other works of the RR authors I can call to mind. Instead, I'll chose a work by an author I wish we read in school: Twain. I loved Innocents Abroad. His description of his travels 150 years ago was very interesting, and his poking fun at his traveling companions was highly entertaining. (Though at times his perceptions of the native people were not as enlightened as one would have wished)

night_shift You didn't have any Twain required in school?? Huh! I've never heard of this one 😅 6y
mabell @UnidragonFrag I know! We didn't read Huck Finn in school, and I don't believe we read any others. I listened to this one a few years ago. Plenty of biting wit 😄 6y
Erinsuereads We read some Twain in fifth grade...out loud....with a male heavy class. That was a bad idea 6y

night_shift I think we were required Huck Finn, but I didn't read it 😂 They're on my eventually read list! 6y

Just saw a special on Twain's journey to Jerusalem that inspired this book, and am wondering: have any followers of mine read this one? Thoughts? General comments about Mark Twain? I'm considering checking out this book.

Classic authors/books/literature are very much not my forte. I think I've only ever voluntarily read a classic (not a mandatory class assignment) once in my life. I am that much of a heathen. Pls help me out, classics fans.

KathyWheeler I found this book to be laugh out loud funny. I loved it. 7y

Twain is my favorite #bookmark, and, for even more fun, read his non-fiction travelogues as if they were being narrated by David Sedaris. It works really well.

Laura317 Oh these are so fun! My mom and I quoted from them all through our trip to London and Paris last year. "Is he dead?" being our favorite. 8y

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

So, for a new reading experience, pick up Innocents Abroad, but read it in "David Sedaris Voice", like Sedaris is reading one of his new essays about his trip to France on NPR. It works great for all Twain non-fiction, but especially his travel writing.

LauraBrook An excellent idea! 8y
meggofrank Hehe. Him reading Holidays on Ice is one of the best parts of driving to the family's for Christmas. 8y

What a wonderful view on good old Europe. Loved the story - still love it.

Urcomped

Twain's humor and sarcasm are so timeless. Sometimes looking at an old civil war era photo, you'll see someone that just looks *modern*. Like if you saw them walking down the street today they wouldn't look 200 years out of place. Twain's writing is like that.

Urcomped Parts are really brilliant. Other parts drag on way too long. Really close to giving it the thumbs up because his humor is so awesome 9y
