Stonehenge: A Novel | Bernard Cornwell
10 posts | 14 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Bestselling author Bernard Cornwell takes us back four thousand years, to a vibrant world of ritual and sacrifice that is at once timeless and wholly original. This historical novel unlocks the mystery of Britain's most haunting and puzzling structure, and tells a tale of three brothersfierce rivalswho are uneasily united in their quest to create a temple to their gods. Lengar, the eldest brother, kills his own father to become chief of his tribe. Camaban, the illegitimate middle brother, is determined to have a massive temple built in his own honor. And Saban, the youngest, who actually builds Stonehenge, must act as mediator between the other two. Stonehenge is the enthrallingly dramatic story of patricide, betrayal, and murder; of bloody brotherly rivalry; and of the never-ending quest for power, wealth, and spiritual fulfillment.

Mehso-so

This was my first of Bernard Cornwell. It wasn't the greatest book, so I'm told, so I'll look for some others of his to enjoy. I was expecting more historical fiction rather than fantasy, and it took a while to really get into it because of all the dealings in war & with the gods. It, overall, was good but kind of so-so. I'll donate this to my little free library.

After. My impromptu visit to the British Museum, and my wander around the Stonehenge exhibition, this got my blood up! Although not my favorite Cornwell novel, he again creates these rouguish characters readers cannot help but root for the whole way through. If you love prehistory, battles and violence then I would recommend this one to you!

Pickpick

A long book, never boring, but there were some moments where I thought "come on, build that effing temple already" ?
The ending I found a bit underwhelming, probably because most elements had been heavily foreshadowed. That said, it was an enjoyable read with an epic - if somewhat dry - story.

robinb I would probably say either TLTTKW or TSLOB. Tidelands sounds good but it and Stonehenge are a little on the long side? 3y
megnews Tidelands sounds excellent. The Secret life of Bees and Last Train to Key West sound good too. I‘m up for any. I agree about the length of Stonehenge. I get so intimidated by books over 500 pages 😂 3y
Susanita @robinb @megnews I hear you about long books. I‘m leaning towards Last Train but will wait to hear from @BridgetteM 3y
SilversReviews LOVE The Secret Life of Bees. 3y

Since everyone's sharing their #eclipse photos... here's my epic fail at taking a picture through the glasses. Instead I somehow got a shot of some of my coworkers standing around in the entryway we affectionately refer to as Stonehenge.

A captivating imagining about the creation of Stonehenge four thousand years ago.
