Freebird: A Novel | Jon Raymond
3 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
A page-turning new novel from the author of Livability, winner of the Oregon Book Award The Singers, an all-American family in the California style, are about to lose everything. Anne is a bureaucrat in the Los Angeles Office of Sustainability whose ideals are compromised by a proposal from a venture capitalist seeking to privatize the citys wastewater. Her brother, Ben, a former Navy SEAL, returns from Afghanistan disillusioned and struggling with PTSD, and starts down a path toward a radical act of violence. And Annes teenage son, Aaron, cant decide if he should go to college or pitch it all and hit the road. They all live inside the long shadow of the Singer patriarch Grandpa Sam, whose untold experience of the Holocaust shapes his familys moral character to the core. Jon Raymond, screenwriter of the acclaimed films Meeks Cutoff and Night Moves, combines these narrative threads into a hard-driving story of one familys moral crisis. In Freebird, Raymond delivers a brilliant, searching novel about death and politics in America today, revealing how the fates of our families are irrevocably tied to the currents of history.

This photo of my grandson, Captain Adorable, seeing the ocean again after a few years away, is the perfect representation of how I feel. After working at City Hall as a temp for 3 years (coming out of retirement), after 10 large (super stressful) and small elections, wading through alphabetizing thousands of ballots as they were mailed in, time crunches, entering SO MANY voter registration forms, the pandemic, I'm free! It's been (cont....)

Suet624 wild and exhausting and fun and friendship-building. And they've asked if I would come back in February so I can help with the Presidential primary and November election, but for now I get to take care of my Lyme-inflamed system, rest, read and enjoy the summer. I'm relieved and excited. 2y
CBee Congrats!! Enjoy 😊 2y

Suet624 @batsy off to the acupuncturist now to try to get a handle on the flareups occurring. 😊😫 2y
DivineDiana So happy for you! Self care time! 👏🏻🥳❤️ 2y
Jas16 Thanks for the hard work that you have done. I am so happy that you are doing to get some well deserved rest. I hope you get to enjoy every second of it. 2y
jlhammar Love that photo! Hope you have some restful and rejuvenating months ahead. 2y
Reggie Yay, Sue. I hope you get all the good rest and relaxation coming to you. 2y
LeahBergen Oh, lovely! 🥰🥰 Enjoy yourself to the fullest. 2y
sarahbarnes Take good care of yourself! 💙💙 2y
Suet624 @Jas16 Thanks so much. I have a bit of concern that I don't actually know how to live a restful, just do things for myself, kind of life but it's worth trying. If I can get my health back together I'll be 100% happier. :) 2y
Suet624 @jlhammar Sometimes I use that photo as inspiration for my day. And coffee. We all need something, right? 2y
Suet624 @Reggie Thanks so much, Reggie. We'll see how long I can stand having the wherewithal not to yell at myself when I'm not involved in hectic, adrenaline-fueled, situations. I apparently expect myself to be running at top speed all the time. Slowing down is actually kind of hard for me. My body always lets me know now when it's time to rest. 2y
Suet624 @DivineDiana Meditation in the morning! Reading in the morning! Making coffee and looking out the window in the morning! How will I fit it all in? 2y
Suet624 @LeahBergen Thank you, Leah. I'm going to try. 2y
Suet624 @sarahbarnes ❤ ❤ ❤ 2y
Jeg Enjoy. ❤️❤️ 2y
marleed Oh wow - thank you for your service. And now take care of yourself. I wasn‘t too sure about retirement either, but found I rather excel at it. Now I reserve all drama in my life to fictional book characters! My first full year of retirement coincided with the pandemic. I used to say I wished I could spend a year reading - so I did. And I haven‘t stopped! Thanks to audiobooks too! 2y
Suet624 @marleed Thanks for your thoughts. I like the idea of excelling at retirement as much as I excel at any of my jobs. If I can put that emphasis on it I‘m sure it would help. I feel such delight in reading in bed right now and getting up whenever I feel like it. 2y
AnnieMcC @Suet624 Good for you. . . enjoy your time off!

#NCBgiveaway This one was a Mr. Book TBR temptation AND an award winner. Published just last year, it's about family, politics, and ethical dilemmas...sounds like a good book to read right about now. (Just because I'm giving it away doesn't mean I don't still plan to read it! 😆) If you're interested and live in the US, comment below and I'll draw names on Tuesday! 😘

#TBRtemptation post! Winner of the #OregonBookAward! The West Coast Singer family is on the brink. Anne's a bureaucrat dealing with a waste privatization proposal. Former SEAL, Ben, deals with PTSD and violence. Aaron can't decide between college or being a nomad. Grandpa Sam deals with his experiences of the Holocaust. This is a novel about politics in America today and how families are intertwined with current events. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
