Mark Ryden: The Gay 90's
Mark Ryden: The Gay 90's | Mark Ryden
1 post | 7 to read
Celebrated Pop Surrealist artist Mark Ryden s newest body of work, presented in this book for the first time. Crowned "the high prince of Lowbrow," Mark Ryden has become a fixture of the contemporary alternative art movement. In his newest work, Mark Ryden: The Gay 90 s, the artist casts his skewed perspective toward the turn of the nineteenth century with such creepy yet beautiful works as a portrait of Abraham Lincoln dressed in foppish 1890s fashion and surrounded with a heavenly nimbus, Jesus Christ playing a pink piano for an audience of kewpie triplet girls, and a Gibson girl in a tight corset constructed entirely of meat. With masterful painting technique and disquieting content, Ryden s newest paintings display his fascination with the earnest kitsch found in popular art of the end of the 1800s, yet reinforces how his paintings now more than ever are a skewering of both historical and current pop cultural touchstones. Ryden s visual cues range from cryptic to cute, balancing his compositions between nostalgic cliche and disturbing archetype. This book showcases his talent for creating paintings that marry accessibility and technique with visceral resonance and sociocultural relevance, making it easy to see why he garners the ardent attention of museums, critics, and serious collectors alike."

Before Lady Gaga's infamous meat-dress, the artist, Mark Ryden, created this nearly life size painting, Incarnation, which appears on the cover of his book, Gay 90s. His pop surrealist paintings are almost always as disturbing as they are amusing, full of big-eyed nymphets lost in arcane worlds of magic, toys, historic icons and deli meat. #readjanuary #DressesOnCovers #markryden

ValerieAndBooks This reminds me of those art dolls --I forget what they're called-- that are collectors items! 8y
Hobbinol @ValerieAndBooks Madam Alexander dolls? You're right! I didn't think of it until you mentioned it, but they are like debauched Madam Alexander dolls😂 8y

Hobbinol @DivineDiana Isn't it?! Despite all the whimsy in his paintings, they are extraordinarily well painted with a great eye turned on minuscule details like northern renaissance artists. 8y
ValerieAndBooks Yes and no. The dress does look like twisted version from a MA doll 😊. I had to do a bit of digging to find what I was thinking of: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blythe_(doll) My cousin's wife's niece does customization of these dolls and sells them to collectors. 8y
Hobbinol @ValerieAndBooks Wow. I wasn't familiar with the Blythe spirit (to copy a Noel Coward title). That is remarkable! Thanks! (edited) 8y
LeahBergen Wow!!! 😍 8y
Hobbinol @LeahBergen Shall we call this mode of dress "haute charcuterie"? 8y

saresmoore My husband is watching Iron Fist and this book was in a scene I happened to catch, set in a gorgeous, artsy apartment. I'm not surprised you are the one to have posted about it! 7y
