Monique and the Mango Rains
Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years with a Midwife in Mali | Kris Holloway
3 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
In a remote corner of West Africa, Monique Dembele saved lives and dispensed hope every day in a place where childbirth is a life-and-death matter. Monique and the Mango Rains is the compelling story of the authors decade-long friendship with Monique, an extraordinary midwife in rural Mali. It is a tale of Moniques unquenchable passion to better the lives of women and children in the face of poverty, unhappy marriages, and endless backbreaking work, as well as her tragic and ironic death. In the course of this deeply personal narrative, as readers immerse in village life and learn firsthand the rhythms of Moniques world, they come to know her as a friend, as a mother, and as an inspired woman who struggled to find her place in a male-dominated world.

Mehso-so

Kris lives as a volunteer in a village in #Mali for 2 yrs. Here she befriends and works with Monique, the local midwife. I learned a lot about healthcare and birth in Mali. I enormously admire Kris and Monique and all they meant to many (way too) young mothers.
As an audiobook (maybe print is better) it‘s however as if I‘ve been listening to the diary of a not especially talented author. 🎧

1. So many. Elf. Christmas Vacation. Anything that isn‘t White Christmas.
2. Night, if I can light candles and turn the bathroom in to a sauna.
3. Marie. It was supposed to be Anne, but then my initials would be RAT so my mom nixed that.
4. Tagged book!
5. This Christmas movie question is leading to some astounding revelations!

CouronneDhiver Smart mom. No need for awkward initials 6y
mrsmarch @CouronneDhiver By “supposed to be” I mean “was my dad‘s idea.” So yes, smart mom. My two are RIT and CWT. Except for Rit being a fabric dye, I think they‘re ok. 6y
