Passion of the New Eve
Passion of the New Eve | Angela Carter
7 posts | 14 read | 10 to read
I know nothing. I am a tabula rasa, a blank sheet of paper, an unhatched egg. I have not yet become a woman, although I possess a woman's shape. Not a woman, no: both more and less than a real woman. Now I am a being as mythic and monstrous as Mother herself . . . ' New York has become the City of Dreadful Night where dissolute Leilah performs a dance of chaos for Evelyn. But this young Englishman's fate lies in the arid desert, where a many-breasted fertility goddess will wield her scalpel to transform him into the new Eve.

Well, that was quite a trip! I never would‘ve picked this up without the 1001 list, and it‘s not one I would recommend to many people. It is set in a dystopian U.S. descending into another civil war and includes a LOT of violence & sexual content. Evelyn begins as a real jerk of a man who is captured by a tribe of women & transformed into a beautiful woman. Suffice to say Eve experiences a completely new perspective.

This was super-graphic and other-wordly. It had a great arc for the main character, he went from being a dick to, errr, no longer having a dick! It was bleak about humanity and really quite odd - BUT - I stuck with it and I'm glad I did, even with the frequent and incredibly detailed descriptions of genitalia. So much to unpick about the relationships between anatomy, sex and gender. Fascinating.

A placeholder rating until I've really had a chance to collect myself. There's so much to think about, not least Carter's stance on feminism and trans* identity that I can't quite unpack yet, it feels like there's a discrepancy between intention and realisation. I'm going to need to follow this up with some academic analyses to get to grips with it fairly so as a book to make me think and question it's definitely a winner.

Is it #litsypartyofone or #lattepartyofone? Chocolate chai latte for an indulgent evening and one of the weirdest books I have read...

andrew61 Ive read 'Nights at the circus' and 'magic toyshop' and circus was particularly strange. I have 'wise children ' waiting to read but may look for this one. I keep meaning to try the recent biography. 8y

I probably won't buy anything, I said. I don't have room for more physical books, I said. I have 115 unread books on my Kindle, I said. I should concentrate on my ARCS, I said.

#litsypartyofone, I said. BUY ALL THE BOOKS, I said.

My head is still whirling trying to process what I've just read. I struggle to rate this book as there are bits I love, and others I struggled to get through. A story that contains so much in a few pages, the mind boggles at times. There's sex changes, goddesses, washed up celebrity, self proclaimed gods and tribes of murderous children. A dystopian, fairytale, love story that perhaps doesn't seem as far fetched in 2017 as one would hope....

Another book I bought pre-loved from Carvoeiro. An ex introduced me to Angela Carter back in 2004 but I never got round to properly reading anything so here goes...!
