The Blood of Heroes
The Blood of Heroes: The 13-Day Struggle for the Alamo-- And the Sacrifice That Forged a Nation | Jim Donovan
3 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
On February 23, 1836, a large Mexican army led by dictator Santa Anna reached San Antonio and laid siege to about 175 Texas rebels holed up in the Alamo. The Texans refused to surrender for nearly two weeks until almost 2,000 Mexican troops unleashed a final assault. The defenders fought valiantly-for their lives and for a free and independent Texas-but in the end, they were all slaughtered. Their ultimate sacrifice inspired the rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!" and eventual triumph. Exhaustively researched, and drawing upon fresh primary sources in U.S. and Mexican archives, THE BLOOD OF HEROES is the definitive account of this epic battle. Populated by larger-than-life characters--including Davy Crockett, James Bowie, William Barret Travis--this is a stirring story of audacity, valor, and redemption.

As a Texas transplant, I am having a wonderful time learning about my new home state. And after a first time visit to the Alamo a few weeks ago, I wanted to read more about it. This book was well researched, honest and fair to both sides of the battle, and very thoughtful. As someone who doesn't read a lot of non-fiction, I was thoroughly entertained while being educated about this time in history.

Christy2318 If you really want to immerse yourself in the Texas Revolution, they do reenactments of the Goliad Massacre at the end of March & at San Jacinto near San Jacinto Day (April 21st). Both are excellent events. Also you can't go wrong w/ an Austin visit to the Capitol and the Bob Bullock museum. 8y

Sara_Planz @Christy2318 I definitely want to see those reenactments. We've been to Austin and visited the Capitol but will be going back for the museum too. 8y
Sara_Planz @Cinfhen thank you. I felt it portrayed both sides fairly and did speak to the treatment of the indigenous people during that time. Both sides were extremely brace and it was an absolutely brutal standoff between them. 8y
