I, Pierre Seel, Deported Homosexual
I, Pierre Seel, Deported Homosexual: A Memoir of Nazi Terror | Pierre Seel
2 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
On a fateful day in May 1941, in Nazi-occupied Strasbourg, seventeen-year- old Pierre Seel was summoned by the Gestapo. This was the beginning of his journey through the horrors of a concentration camp. For nearly forty years, Seel kept this secret in order to hide his homosexuality. Eventually he decided to speak out, bearing witness to an aspect of the Holocaust rarely seen. This edition, with a new foreword from gay-literature historian Gregory Woods, is an extraordinary firsthand account of the Nazi roundup and the deportation of homosexuals.

I knew about this element of the Holocaust, but I had no idea the allies transported them to prisons after freeing everyone else who was lucky enough to survive. I also didn‘t know there was a book about this specific experience. I‘ve added it to my cart.

Texreader Ken Follett‘s Century Trilogy delves into this history, especially with one of the most horrible scenes in a book that I may never forget. I believe it was the second book, the best in the series. 4y
GingerAntics @Texreader is it historical fiction? I‘m always cautious about historical fiction. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Yes that‘s Ken Follett‘s best genre. He just tells a story about characters in a concentration camp because of their homosexuality. It definitely brings light to the fact. His Pillars of the Earth novels are his real masterpieces though. He‘s an amazing writer. 4y

GingerAntics @Texreader okay, I‘ll give him a go. You‘re part of the historical fiction inaccuracy support group, so I‘ll trust your judgement. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Century Trilogy went downhill for me. So it‘s hard to recommend. That second book in the trilogy was so good but I don‘t know that I‘d read it alone. Pillars of the Earth on the other hand is 5-star read. It‘s about the building of the massive churches during the Middle Ages and I understand he spent years studying the subject. May not be your cup of tea at the moment. On the other hand, it has a rather corrupt churchman!! 😉 4y
GingerAntics @Texreader that one sounds really good, actually. 4y
monkeygirlsmama I somehow missed ever hearing about this aspect. How did I miss hearing about this?! 😲 4y
GingerAntics @monkeygirlsmama there was so much hate and devastation, this certainly wasn‘t covered in my school. I doubt it was covered in most schools, in fact, especially in America. I forget where I read about it first, but I never really heard anyone talk about it until a prof brought it up in Grad School. 4y

This is late for Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is a horrible truth that some people are able to countenance vile, evil behavior they are not subjected to. This book is a reminder that the price of Hate is your humanity.
