Fighting on the Home Front: The Legacy of Women in World War One | Kate Adie
3 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Bestselling author and award-winning former BBC Chief News Correspondent Kate Adie reveals the ways in which women's lives changed during World War One In 1914 the world changed forever. When World War One broke out and a generation of men went off to fight, women emerged from the shadows of their domestic lives. Now a visible force in public life, they began to take up essential roles - from transport to policing, munitions to sport, entertainment, even politics. Kate Adie charts the seismic move towards equal rights with men that began a century ago and asks what these women achieved for future generations. This is history at its best - a vivid, compelling account of the pioneering women who helped win the war. 'This is history at its most celebratory... The book is chatty, personal and packed with plenty of anecdote' TELEGRAPH 'Kate Adie provides a compelling account of how women's lives changed during World War One.' IRISH TATLER

I don't read much non-fiction, but this one was an interesting and sometimes fun read about women's changing lives during World War One in England. There are lots of interesting facts and anecdotes.

Women were needed for all kinds of jobs, but not wanted (especially by the men). They were payed less or nothing at all, and there was the expectation that it would only be for the duration of the war.

Highly recommended!

There's a passage where the author describes what happened after the english government once again denied women the right to vote before World War One. Tea gardens going up in fire, holes dug in golf courses (!)... and the paragraph ends with the quote above 😄

My entire #bookhaul from Christmas--but I'm so excited about it!

pocketmermaid Ooh! This looks interesting, I added it to my TBR. I did my senior thesis on women on the home front in WWII, so I'm interested in learning more about women in WWI! 8y
Clare-Dragonfly @pocketmermaid That's awesome! I learned about this book from Mary Robinette Kowal, if you're also interested in fiction about women in WWI. 8y
