One of the most outrageous, original and insightful books ever written on the subject of alienation and societal decay, COWS is a violent, blood-soaked nightmare - a tale of love, self-empowerment and talking cows. Hailed around the (…more)

Pickpick

Proceed with caution, this is an extreme book with trigger warnings left and right. So, if you have a puke bucket nearby, here's my review of "Cows" by Matthew Stokoe.

Cows | MR Matthew Stokoe

"Where there had been a wall and a window, the rain had left an open square, empty of everything but a dull, drizzled view of warehouses and flooding streets. As though God had reached down with a knife and neatly cross-sectioned the house, looking for sinners."

"Steven ran away from it, out into the hall and down to his room...into the room that had held him in its grim arms through all those long nights when the Beast had raged in the corridor outside. The new paint and the fresh fabric meant nothing, the walls that had watched over his horror were there still, under all of it, and they closed their old darkness about him like a revolting but familiar narcotic."

"He bathed himself in blood from the large arteries in the neck while the thrashing body dropped shit down its trouser legs, trying madly to clean itself before God paid attention and took it back."

"Through the window the city dawn sky looked sick—a febrile, unlaundered sheet smeared with the sweaty excretions of the dark hours."

"From the second she had squirted him from her cunt they had loathed each other. In the littered kitchen, on the table they ate from still, she had pulled him out of the mess between her legs and cursed him. And he, sensing a lifetime of worse to come, had pissed in her eyes."

Mehso-so

So, ummmmm, I‘m not sure I can properly review this. This is the kind of book that no matter what you say, someone will call you sick. Lol. It is definitely different. It is definitely dark and twisted. Not for the feint of heart. It‘s also not without merit. If you‘ve got a strong stomach, just give it a go. Maybe…

What the hell did I get into? I‘m used to offensive novels, but this…this is something special. I‘ll hang in there and see.

ReadingOver50 I‘ve heard crazy things about this one! 4y
MaddestMax Yes. Omg. It‘s…bizarre. 🤢 4y

One star is too gracious. I'm sorry, but this was just awful. I quit at 30% in though was ready to quit after just a few pages. I don't mind weird. I don't mind some gross. However, this one crossed the line for me. Too vile and disturbing.

Started this today. I've been wanting to read it for a while, so I'm pretty excited to finally get to.
