Black Hills | Dan Simmons
3 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Paha Sapa, 'Black Hills', is an American Indian shaman who, as a young boy at the Battle of Little Bighorn, believes that he has taken the ghost of the dying General Custer into his body. Sixty years later, while working as a dynamiter on Mount Rushmore, Paha Sapa plots to blow up the monument. Meanwhile, Custer finds himself trapped in a strange, dark place and begins to write sensuous, heartbreaking missives to his beloved wife. Thus begins an intricate, visionary story that sweeps across some of the most tumultuous and violent periods of American history, from the old West to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and into our own time and beyond.

Pickpick

I like historical based stories so enjoyed this book, the only part of the book that I didn‘t quite get or how it fit into the story was Custer‘s letters to his wife discussing their lovemaking etc, not quite sure what that was about? Simmons seems to base the book on the accurate history of the Black Hills and the Native Americans plight

Bailedbailed

Nope. Nope. Nope. I like Simmons but this book just wasn‘t working for me. The portions from Black Hill‘s POV were interesting and full of culture. The portions from Custer‘s POV were basically just reading letters to his wife about their sexcapades. 😳 Annoying. With 17 more hours to go and still no progression in the story, it was a bail.
