A real life story of Chine's last empress. I already have read a book about her by Pearl S. Buck but that was slightly different. It is the first part and it was good, very interesting story. I think my problem was again the translation, the script had no life in it.

A re-read before I pick up the sequel. I had forgotten pretty much everything so I‘m glad I picked it up again. It definitely bogs down towards the end but is a very engaging story, otherwise.

This is a real life based story of the last empress of China. The way she rose from her struggles and hardships is uncanny and noteworthy. My heart felt happy after reading this story.
Anchee Min has very beautifully written this story, the details are so well elaborated without overdoing it. I am looking forward to read more of her.

I read Anchee Min's two novels about the last empress of China out of order but it still worked. Both are amazing and reading the sequel first did not feel like I sequel, I knew what was going on the entire time.

Orchid is a methodical strategist. Often blinded by her vanity and selfishness but her greatest skill is her keen observation prowess. She uses what she has to take what she wants.

This is a favourite holiday read for me. Steeped in history but enough story telling and character to stop it just being a textbook. I am willing to overlook inaccuracies (if there are any - I am no expert!) In favour of the author's rich description and characterisation of these historical characters.

Truly lovely stuff. Will definitely read again.

#readingwomenmonth a series. I don't read many series but I've had these two for ages and still haven't gotten round to them. @ephemeralwaltz @Andrew65

Andrew65 These do look interesting. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Andrew65 I remember the first one being very popular when it came out and I just never got around to reading them for some reason 6y
Andrew65 I‘m having difficulty choosing for this category - I read a lot of series. Choices include Kate Ellis, Ann Cleeves, Elly Griffiths, Sharon Penman, Kate Atkinson, L J Sellers, Jacqueline Winspear, Linda Castillo, Elizabeth Chadwick, Tess Gerritsen, Sandra Gulland, Robin Hobb, Hilary Mantel, Karin Slaughter, Kathy Reichs. I could go on! Decisions, decisions! 6y

Weaponxgirl @Andrew65 ohhh, that is a selection. If I'm having trouble I go with what makes the best picture. I'm feeling this way looking forward on the prompts looking at memoir and translated. Too many choices 6y
Andrew65 @Weaponxgirl I also sometimes go for the lesser known books. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Andrew65 yes! I love to try to spread the love on lesser known books. My personal collection of physical books is mostly of lesser know authors that aren't on kindle 6y

Outstanding book. I've always been very intrigued about the history of China and knowing that the characters of this book is modelled after real people intrigued me even more. I would highly recommend this book!
