How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time
How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time | Marisa Meltzer, Kara Jesella
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
For a generation of teenage girls, Sassy magazine was nothing short of revolutionary so much so that its audience, which stretched from tweens to twentysomething women, remains obsessed with it to this day and back issues are sold for hefty sums on the Internet. For its brief but brilliant run from 1988 to 1994, Sassy was the arbiter of all that was hip and cool, inspiring a dogged devotion from its readers while almost single-handedly bringing the idea of girl culture to the mainstream. In the process, Sassy changed the face of teen magazines in the United States, paved the way for the unedited voice of blogs, and influenced the current crop of smart women's zines, such as Bust and Bitch, that currently hold sway. How Sassy Changed My Life will present for the first time the inside story of the magazine's rise and fall while celebrating its unique vision and lasting impact. Through interviews with the staff, columnists, and favorite personalities we are brought behind the scenes from its launch to its final issue and witness its unique fusion of feminism and femininity, its frank commentary on taboo topics like teen sex and suicide, its battles with advertisers and the religious right, and the ascension of its writers from anonymous staffers to celebrities in their own right."

My April 1990 copy of Sassy from when I was the #edgeofseventeen. No book reviews but Jason Priestly is listed as "one to watch" and they recommend the film adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale.
Also How Sassy Changed My Life, a book I could have written ?

bookishkai Oh man, Sassy was the BEST. It was blissful escape from my junior high where everyone wore the same Champion sweatshirts, carried the same Esprit bags, and listened to New Kids on the Block. 8y

Little Llama sporting her favorite look; I call it Grunge Fairy Princess. She is a free spirit with her own sense of style, and even when she's hardcore into being a Threenager (yesterday she was seriously full on exorcist child/Bride of Chuckie) I adore her fierce fiery self. I'm sure that had she been a teen in the early 90's she would have been a Sassy reader. This morning she rode this same scooter all over the zoo in a pink party dress.

LornaDH Isla has the same shoes. And dress-sense. And her scooter is a balance bike. Kindred spirits! 💜 8y
Cinfhen LOVE everything about this picture and post 💕💕💕#fierceandfabulous (edited) 8y

Reviewsbylola That is awesome! My kids are totally the same way! Genevieve has been very vocal about her clothes for years and gets a lot of compliments. 😂 Florence is now jumping on the bandwagon. Last night she insisted on wearing a neon green and zebra printed romper to bed. 😂 8y

Packing to move and found this box of treasure. Any other Sassy readers out there? I've purged a lot over the years but still can't bear to part with my collection.

LauraBrook Hell yeah, Sassy! Wish I had my old ones. I think I still have a few YM's hanging around. 90's forever!!! 🙌🏼 8y
8little_paws YAAAAAAS QUEEN I read this religiously in the Age of Grunge and would cut out pictures and articles and hung them all over my walls. That was an awesome time to grow up. 8y
