Mohawk is not the picturesque #smalltown you buy a postcard of as you pass through. It is a perpetually down on its luck place where it's residents do what they can to carve out a life. #rockinmay
so-soThis book didn't quite work for me. It jumped around a lot, and certain details were kept from the reader to create plot surprises in a way that felt clumsy. BUT! A lot of the seeds for his later books - which are excellent - are present here. As a writer it's great to read someone's early stuff knowing they get better. To go from this to Empire Falls is extraordinary; that it's even possible means there's hope for the rest of us.
