'Reef' is a love story set in a spoiled paradise. The narrator, Triton, goes to work as a houseboy at the age of eleven for Mister Salgado, a marine biologist. As he recounts his story, a boy becomes a man in a world on the brink of chaos.

This is a beautifully written short novel. Set in Sri Lanka starting in 1962, when Triton, an orphan, becomes houseboy for Mr Salgado. (Note: The writing about food in this will make you DROOL!) The political unrest in the country is nearly subsumed by Triton‘s focus and care for his master - but you see his awareness of his own needs and those of the oppressed begin to grow. A really subtle sensitive work.

Centique I intended to finish this on a boat outing on Tuesday (see pic) but Too Many Children happened. 😂 7y
Cathythoughts Love your picture, I‘m getting a yearning for summer 😍 7y
Centique @Cathythoughts Litsy always makes me nostalgic for the opposite season too! I‘m seeing snowy trees, cosy mittens and hot chocolate and feeling envious because I‘m feeling hot and sticky here! 7y

I've read several books #setonanisland, but I've been in one of those ogle-my-TBR moods lately (like that isn't everyday 😂), so here's a TBR pick. Anyone read it? #SriLanka #SeasonsReadings2016
