dabbe Ouch! That's what I feel I sometimes did to my kids when teaching grammar! Especially “now diagram the sentence.“ Though I have to say, I diagram sentences for FUN! I think of them as word puzzles. #yeahimweird 🤩 11mo
IndoorDame @dabbe I get that 😂. But the alternative is me, from the generation of kids who basically weren‘t taught grammar. So now when I teach foreign language I google basic English grammar terms over and over to answer my kiddos more complex questions. 11mo

dabbe @IndoorDame It really is important, isn't it? Even with my high school juniors, I'd tell them, “We won't even begin to have you write a paragraph until you can write perfect sentences that are at least 15 words or more.“ And that would take about half of the year. 🤩😂😍 11mo
IndoorDame @dabbe the funny thing is the hippy do it yourself thing they tried out with us for a few years kind of worked. I write really well, I can edit other people‘s writing excellently. But it‘s all intuitive. I can‘t explain what I‘m doing to anyone else. Or even to myself really cause I don‘t know the “rules”. I can‘t name a part of speech or a tense past like what they teach 4th graders. I couldn‘t diagram a sentence if there was a gun to my head… 11mo
IndoorDame @dabbe “creative spelling” on the other hand, was a totally failed experiment 😂. 35 years later, even after the invention of automated spellcheck people can still tell I have no idea how to spell 11mo
dabbe @IndoorDame Some of us are talented that way. Just like someone who intuitively can analyze a complex piece of literature. Some people just can't or they struggle with it--like I struggle with math (oy!). You have the gift of language. And thank the language gods for spell-check! 🤩 11mo
IndoorDame @dabbe right there with you on math! 11mo
