so-so
This is the story of Wallis Simpson, who Edward chose over the crown of England. The story is only her life basically. The author paints a picture of a woman who only thinks about social position, clothes, marriage, and prestige. I would think the woman who captured the heart of a king had more substance. I read the whole book hoping for more, disappointed. 2.5 ⭐
rretzler Probably not hard to imagine that she captured his heart when you think about his character as well. I haven‘t read a lot about him but the little I have makes me think they may have been perfect for each other. It makes me wonder what the world would be like today if he hadn‘t abdicated - would the outcome of WWII have been different with Edward VIII on the throne with Wallis as his mistress? (edited) 6y
Ericalambbrown Sadly, everything I‘ve ever read about either of them, even pieces meant to be flattering, has left me with the impression that they were both rather vacuous. 6y
CarolynM @rretzler I think he would have made it a lot harder for Churchill, and it may have had an impact on morale, particularly in London. @Ericalambbrown I agree, and by many accounts she treated him very badly. 6y

Crazeedi @rretzler that's what was disappointing about this book it didnt go into their relationship, he was just a figure she admired all her life till they met and she set her sights on him. I'd like to read more about them together. 6y
Crazeedi @Ericalambbrown that's how this book showed her, caring more about looks, getting a man, being in proper society etc. 6y
Crazeedi @CarolynM this book portrays him as caring about the poor etc. What little it did t as lk about him. This book stopped at their meeting. I'd like to read more about them together. From what I gather he never really wanted to be king 6y
