House of Thieves
House of Thieves: A Novel | Charles Belfoure
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Architect "The world of old New York comes alive in this beguiling tale of mystery and intrigue... Charles Belfoure definitely has the touch." Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author of The Patriot Threat and The Lincoln Myth The Debt Must Be Repaid or Else In 1886 New York, a respectable architect shouldn't have any connection to the notorious gang of thieves and killers that rules the underbelly of the city. But when John Cross's son racks up an unfathomable gambling debt to Kent's Gents, Cross must pay it back himself. All he has to do is use his inside knowledge of high society mansions and museums to craft a robbery even the smartest detectives won't solve. The take better include some cash too the bigger the payout, the faster this will be over. With a newfound talent for sniffing out vulnerable and lucrative targets, Cross becomes invaluable to the gang. But Cross's entire life has become a balancing act, and it will only take one mistake for it all to come crashing down and for his family to go down too.

The description “Age of Innocence meets Gangs of NY” is accurate! Great, flawed characters and a wonderful romp from the Mansions of the Gilded Age elite to the opium dens and gambling halls of New York‘s dingy, rough, streets. Multiple storylines all pull together in movie-like ending. I can see this as a film!

Jdav9613 I was actually wondering myself why this isn‘t a movie…? Great story and awesome characters! 3y

THE JOKER AND THE THIEF

“Gambling debts, robbery rings, and high society and thugs blending together for a marvelous read.

HOUSE OF THIEVES takes us back to the late 1800's when women needed escorts and when men were their protectors. The men definitely kept secrets from them as they carried out their days.”

Breaking Bad meets White Collar set in 1880‘s high society. An architect related to the Astor‘s has to plan heists of his friends and clients for a high powered gang in order to pay back his Harvard graduate son‘s gambling debt before his whole family gets killed in retaliation. Just a really fun read that feels like you are thrown into the early gilded age. Bonus points for being set in a plethora of real life gilded age mansions that still exist

TODAY'S PROMPT: ANGRY

I don't have too many books with angry characters in them, but THE HOUSE OF THIEVES had some characters that could get angry and be frightening.

Mehso-so

A member of 1880s High Society gets entangled with the criminal underworld. This could have been an interesting plot, except when all members of the elite family get entangled separately, it loses something. The climax would have been great in a 1970s action movie, but was not great literature.

There sometimes comes a point in a book when you think back over what happened, check how many pages are left, and have the sinking feeling of, "Oh. This might be one of those books where not everyone makes it out okay." For this one, it was page 300, Chapter 50.

rachelm That feeling is always so jarring... 8y
Arabiatta Awful feeling. Especially when you can't fight your own stubbornness and just put it down. 8y

Probably just "so-so" objectively, but reading it concurrently with "Maestra" is turning Belfoure into the freakin' love-child of Charles Dickens and Edith Wharton.

SoniaC Every time you mention maestra I get a little happier I'm not reading it. 9y

Started this one last night. As best I can tell from the beginning of this and "The Alienist" by Caleb Carr, the entirety of New York City in the late 1800s spent 90% of their free time at Delmonico's.

Suzy200 I loved The Paris Architect so look forward to hearing more about this one. 9y
Procrastireader I read The Alienist and I was starting to wonder if Delmonico's was A) the only restaurant of the time Carr thought people would recognize, or B) the only restaurant of the time 9y
