11 posts | 8 read
A young girl's courage is tested in this haunting, wordless story. When a farm girl discovers a runaway slave hiding in the barn, she is at once startled and frightened. But the stranger's fearful eyes weigh upon her conscience, and she must make a difficult choice. Will she have the courage to help him? Unspoken gifts of humanity unite the girl and the runaway as they each face a journey: one following the North Star, the other following her heart. Henry Cole's unusual and original rendering of the Underground Railroad speaks directly to our deepest sense of compassion.

Historical fiction - published in 2012. A farm girl discovers an escaped slave hiding in the barn. Overcoming her initial fear, she silently hides food from the family dinner table to take to the man or woman (we never discover). The family is wordless too, when the soldiers arrive with offers of a reward, but leave empty handed.

This wordless work of HF by Henry Cole follows is the story of a young girl during the time of the Underground Railroad who discovers a runaway slave hiding in the barn. The pictures depict the connection that the young girl and the stranger make. I think this book would best be taught using S because of the lack of words and strong meaning that can be conveyed.

DrSpalding This is a powerful wordless picture book. Excellent choice! The images are gorgeous and truly beg for the story to be written. Some teachers use wordless picture books to have the children write what they see! Just another activity that could be used to teach writing skills and social studies content. 5y

There are no words, however, you can make up words along the way to tell a story.

This book has no words so the illustrations tell the whole story.

Unspoken is a historical fiction book written by Henry Cole. This book is about the underground railroad. There are a ton of illustrations that tell the story. This book would be difficult for young children but good for older students.

This book was all illustrations and no words. It quite literally doesn‘t require speaking; unspoken. I like how it shows the experience of traveling the Underground Railroad and how you have to be quiet and not speak in order to survive.

I was blown away by this book and the way it was written (drawn). With no words, and few images (really detailed, though)...it is important to really take in each illustration to grasp the full story.
