Well, I‘m finally getting around to reading this book, about an archaeological expedition to Tell El- Amarna in the 1930s, and it‘s wonderful!

I had a newer paperback edition, and then I found this vintage edition, and I‘ve just recently found and bought ANOTHER book by this author. The bookish fates were telling me it was definitely time. 😆

I‘m sure this book was recommended to me by @LeahBergen 🙌 after i read a book about Nefertiti‘s life. This is the memoir of Mary Chubb who as a young woman in 1930 went to assist at the archeological dig at Tell el Amarna. It is a gentle, very English memoir and was a lovely read. There are a few sentences which make you flinch (re the assumption of authority/greater wisdom about another people‘s history) but thats worth consideration too. ⬇️

I started reading the novel Nefertiti and it reminded me of a book I was assigned to read in junior high (55 years ago, yikes!). I couldn‘t remember the title after all that time, but I did some digging in the Library of Congress catalog, and discovered the tagged book. As soon as I saw the author‘s name, I knew I‘d found what I was looking for. Hope I can get hold of a copy for a reread. It was published in the 50s.

@LeahBergen I promised I‘d show you my hardcover copy, which came with an interesting bit of ephemera. It belonged to a woman named Carolyn Fisher, who Google told me was a professor at UCLA. She apparently received it as a gift (or a recommendation) from another professor (whose name I can‘t figure out), because this letter was pasted in the back. No date, but obviously typed on an old typewriter. I ❤️ love finding these treasures in books. 😊

In 1930 a group of 5 young archaeologists set out to excavate the site of Tell el Amarna, taking the author of this memoir with them as field secretary. Mary Chubb describes her time there with wonder, living in a house “where Nefertiti must once have walked and talked”.
