I went into this - the last book of my 2022 Modern Library Classics Challenge - not knowing anything about it and thinking I would be disappointed. Boy was I wrong!

It's a slow burn psychological thriller with great characters and expressive, evocative language. Based on Goodreads, people either like it or hate it. I'm in the Like It Camp. Surprised to see only a handful of reviews here on Litsy.

Bought this for a quarter from my library's book sale, never having heard of it before. Turns out it's something of a cult classic amongst writers and readers of a certain era. There were aspects of the MC, Axel Heyst, that I felt uncomfortably connected to, specifically travel as a form of detachment rather than a means of discovery and connection, a way to pass through life unattached and unburdened as you race towards death like a finish line.

Popping back in against doctor's orders to spread the good news. Do you guys remember the restaurant that served alcohol to *my 8 year old son*???

They are closed. For good.

Ha!!!

(Popping back into convalescence 👋👋👋)

Melissa_J All of them? Or just the one close to you? 6y
tournevis @Melissa_J Just the one location that served alcohol to my son. The chain remains. 6y
Melissa_J Wonder if there were other incidents at the restaurant? Not that what happened with your son isn‘t reason enough to close them down. (edited) 6y

Not as exciting as finding a $100 bill in a used book, but interesting, I think. This sales receipt doesn't give the year, but given the price it's probably around 1920-ish which is the copyright date on the book. I looked up Chandler's in Evanston and found out they went out of business in 1995 after 100 years in business. Apparently John Malkovich worked there at one time. 😊

LeahBergen I love finding things like this. 👍🏻 7y
DrexEdit @Tamra I know what you mean. And given the condition of the receipt I'd guess it's been in this place in the book since the day it was purchased! 7y

YES!!! I think S&S was looking for a reason to cancel the deal after all the bad press. ✊

OffTheBeatenShelf.com About damn time! I'm still not going to praise them for the decision, though, because they still gave him the book deal despite all the multitudes of other horrible things he's said and done. Like, they don't get brownie points for cancelling a book amid pedophilia when he's still a Nazi and they've known that from the beginning. So S&S was fine with all that shit, apparently. 8y
HardcoverHearts The schadenfreude is delicious right now! 8y

Ubookquitous @OffTheBeatenShelf.com - agreed. I'm all for free speech but no one needs to give the idiots, racists and sickos of the world a forum, let alone pay the for their vile, hateful words 8y
HardcoverHearts Oh and check out Roxanne Gay's comments on this. She is on point, as usual! 8y
BookThia In Canada, our free speech laws are tempered by clauses that prohibit hate-speech. So no Cdn publisher could publish a book that was anti-semetic (or anti-anything) You can say you disagree with a belief or a lifestyle but you can't name call or promote discriminatory behaviours. These laws have been tested in our courts I remember in uni a student was expelled and charged with hate-speech for distributing anti-gay literature. (edited) 8y
SuperPunkNinja @HardcoverHearts I saw! I didn't think I could love her more but I was wrong. 8y
