Berlin Book Two: City of Smoke | Jason Lutes
7 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
The second installment of the epic historical trilogy The second volume of Jason Lutes's historical epic finds the people of Weimar Berlin searching for answers after the lethal May Day demonstration of 1929. Tension builds along with the dividing wall between communists and nationalists, Jews and Gentiles, as the dawn of the Second World War draws closer. Meanwhile, the nightlife of Berlin heats up as many attempt to distract themselves from the political upheavals within the city. The American jazz band Cocoa Kids arrives and quickly becomes a fixture. The lives of the characters within Lutes's epic weave together to create a seamless portrait of this transitory city. Marthe Muller follows her lover Kurt Severing as he interviews participants in the May Day demonstration, but she moonlights in the city's lesbian nightlife.Severing acts as a window through which the political shifts within the city and its participants can be seen. This historical graphic novel trilogy is truly epic. A masterwork nearly twenty years in the making. Set in Weimar Republic Berlin (1928-1933), Lutes tells the stories of ordinary citizens to show how one of the most progressive places in the world could give way to the rise of fascism. An important reminder that history often repeats itself.

I finished this about a week ago and just realized I hadn‘t put a review up yet! Anyways, I loved this even more than book one. It focuses more on the characters than book one, but significant historical moments are still there (including cameos by Josephine Baker and Joseph Goebels). The ending was chilling (especially in the aftermath of the 2016 election). My first ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read this year. Looking forward to book three!

I‘m pretty busy this weekend, so only goal for this #readathon is to finish this graphic novel.

What a great read! I can't wait for the third book to come out in September... I'm growing attached to the different characters, and it's very interesting to follow what is happening in Berlin from 1929 to 1930.

Lovely. And a good description of what journalism should be.

Nice reference to a song mentioned in the seminal 'Berlin Alexanderplatz '
