This book is simple without being simplistic. It tells the stories of three children who come to a school in the U.S. from other countries, and the difficulties they experience in learning a new language and a new culture. This book does a great job in showing how these children navigate all these changes and adjust to a new kind of life.
My son (12yo) just joined Litsy as @the_magicreader. He's probably going to post a ton of kitten pictures and comic pictures. He might post in German as well.
Anyway, give him a warm welcome, he begged to get this app.
I'm New Here is a RF by Anne Sibley O'Brien. It's about three children, a Guatemalan, a Korean and Somalian and there struggles of entering a American school. It's a great book to read in the classroom to encourage acceptance of students of different cultures. http://www.imyourneighborbooks.org/2016/01/22/im-new-here-classroom-community-gu... #UCFLAE3414sp17
This wonderful, simple story follows three students from different countries adjusting to a new school. It's a lovely and hopeful read for early grade schoolers.

What would it feel like to start school in a new place where you don't know the language or customs? This book explores the experiences of three children as they start school in the US. It makes it easy to discuss the challenges and feelings with young children and help them learn to empathize and reach out. My only complaint is that the illustrations make the book seem dated even though it is only a year or so old.

I am all thrown off this week for #picturebookmonth and don't even have time much today. But I want every household to read this book and talk about the reality of the faces we see and know in our country and community. I'm New Here looks at the cultural and linguistic struggles of a Guatemalan child, a Korean child, and a Somali child. Learn more, too, at www.imyourneighborbooks.org.
