When I Was Young in the Mountains (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
When I Was Young in the Mountains (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Cynthia Rylant
13 posts | 14 read | 3 to read
When I was young in the mountains, Grandfather came home in the evening covered with the black dust of a coal mine. Only his lips were clean, and he used them to kiss the top of my head. Growing up in the mountains was special. Grandmother made hot corn bread and fried okra. There were trips to the swimming hole and Crawford's store. Each pleasure was one to share - and remember. And each is part of a gentle story, illuminated with perceptively happy paintings, that evokes the love of a way of life, of a family, and most of all, of a place.

Caldecott winner, When I Was Young in the Mountains is a must read IR, F picture book. In this book, the readers get a glimpse of a simple country life in the mountains. We learn that sometimes a person can have very little, but that very little means a great deal to them. The author describes a wonderful life of routine, sacrifice, family, and love. The pictures do such a great job of representing the story that you could almost learn the story

MFlowers just by looking at the illustrations. The following link has the students use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.
https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5687 With a picture book, this becomes a little easier to accomplish. You could even fill out a character chart by simply showing the illustrations. This coincides with UDL principle 4.1 vary the methods for response and navigation.
4y
MFlowers EL strategy 30 pairs well with the book: Encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships. The illustrations will make it easier for your EL students to understand the story and comprehend what is going on. When you base your assignment on strictly the illustrations, you are purposefully aiding your EL students and including them more in the classroom. #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 4y
DrSpalding I agree with independent reading but it also could be part of a social studies unit. Your English learner explanation is so thorough! I like the idea of completing a character chart as well. Teaching children about the narrative elements of stories is something you can do with any picture book. 4y

This HF book follows a young girl as she relives her best childhood memories while living in the mountains. In 1983 it won the title of Caldecott Honor Book. This story would do best as storytelling. A UDL that would work good here would be 2.1, “Clarify vocabulary and symbols,” because this book has some vocabulary words that even I had to look up. #UCFLAE3414F19

JennaMichelleCohn Another UDL that would work well here is 3.2, “Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships.” A good ESOL strategy would be 11, “Place language in a meaningful context,” because the tougher vocabulary really relates to the setting. 5y

ccipriati I've never heard of this story before but it seems very interesting! 5y
DrSpalding This is a great example of historical fiction. Helping students to understand how different people live during different time periods, in different ways is so important. Picture books can do this! Use them. 5y

SierraC Above is a link for an activity to have students create their own picture book just like Cynthia Rylant. The EL strategies I would use are 1,4 and 6. I want to make sure my ELL understand the different phrases used in the book so they can comprehend the story, so I will pre teach some words. The UDL strategies I would use are 1.1 and 3.1, I want to supply background information to my students and I will do that by displaying picture cards to 6y

When I Was Young in the Mountains is the 1983 Caldecott award winner. This a story about a girl that never wanted to leave her grandparents house in the mountains. This would be a great RA book, espeically for Grandparents Day! The theme of this book is whT family life is about and the simple pleasures of growing up. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Jenniferj11419 Children need to understand how important family is and that they never get too old to be with their family, especially their grandparents. I think this book also teaches children that things like family should never be forgotten.

DrSpalding Wonderful resources. Minor typos; be sure to proof and or edit. Thoughtful, once again and your EL/UDL alignment. Well done. 7y

This Caldecott Winner was the very first book Cynthia Rylant ever wrote. It is a RF based on her life in the Appalachian Mountains. She wrote about her childhood, family, and some of her experiences in living out of civilization. This book would be great for an AS because Cynthia has so many amazing books! #UCFLAE3414f17

MeganMc http://wellreadchild.blogspot.com/2007/12/when-i-was-young-in-mountains-learning... this website takes you to a couple different lesson plans. My favorite lesson is having the students compare and contrast her life(without civilization) and our lives. This really gets students thinking about how other people live. 7y
MeganMc The UDL is 3.1 activate it supply background knowledge. The EL strategy is 4 link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. If you can relate the story to something in these students lives they will understand so much more. 7y

It‘s about a young girl and boy who live with their grandparents in the mountains and enjoy every part of the daily life there. #ucflae3414f17

farynantenucci I found this resource where children can make a flip book of personal experiences modeled after how the text is written http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/when-young-litera... UDL 9.3 develop self assessment and reflection. EL 10 teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups. 7y

Here are two beautiful children's books by local authors. One is about growing up in the West Virginia mountains, the other is about the friendship between an old fiddle player and a young boy learning to fiddle. It follows the friendship as the older man ages and the boy grows up. One of my son's favorites. #localauthor #appalachia #westvirginia #aprilbookshowers

Gezemice We vacation every year in West Virginia, where we visit with family in the middle of nowhere in the mountains. I absolutely love it there! So peaceful and gorgeous. 8y
Blaire @Gezemice that's wonderful to hear! It is a beautiful state that is often overlooked. I've lived here for about 8 years. 8y

This could be set in any number of small towns in early 20th century Appalachia. My grandma grew up in Appalachia, and even though she moved north to Michigan, the hill country never left her heart. I'm thankful for the visits that I got to make with her to her hometown, and for all the stories she told me about her childhood. This book helps me feel close to her when I miss her. 💜5/4/25 - 7/30/08
