The Return
The Return | Victoria Hislop
Beneath the majestic towers of the Alhambra, Granada's cobbled streets resonate with music and secrets. Sonia Cameron knows nothing of the city's shocking past; she is here to dance. But in a quiet caf, a chance conversation and an intriguing collection of old photographs draw her into the extraordinary tale of Spain's devastating civil war. Seventy years earlier, the caf is home to the close-knit Ramrez family. In 1936, an army coup led by Franco shatters the country's fragile peace, and in the heart of Granada the family witnesses the worst atrocities of conflict. Divided by politics and tragedy, everyone must take a side, fighting a personal battle as Spain rips itself apart.

I loved the beginning of the novel. It‘s 2001, and we meet Sonia and her friend Maggie. They‘re in Granada to take salsa classes.

Then the story shifts to Granada before, during and after the Spanish Civil War and how Franco became the leader. In this part we meet the Ramirez family, who consists of Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez and their 3 sons and 1 daughter. In this part Hislop lost me and I‘m not sure how that happened. Cont. ⬇️

AnneCecilie I‘m not sure how it happened, but this part felt too long. I got the feeling that Hislop had read a lot about this time period in Spanish history from both sides and wanted to put in as much as possible. And I never feel like that about books. And since Hislop lost me during this part of the story, I didn‘t really care much about the ending. Cont. ⬇️ 6y

Ready to start my fourth book for #MakeMeReadIt.

I read her debut, The Island, and wasn‘t blown away by it. Hope this turns out differently.

Velvetfur Omg this book is fantastic! I haven't read any of her others but this one really is amazing. I'll look forward to your thoughts on it! 6y
AnneCecilie @Velvetfur So happy to hear that. So far I‘m really enjoying it. 6y

Another book club read. I didn‘t really enjoy the writing in this book but it was a good story with a fascinating setting that kept me turning the pages and made me want to visit Granada.

So I REALLY didn‘t need any more books, especially not after the fab book exchange this week, but you know how it is....
The pile of 3 is from Waterstones bargain box, Q9 each, and the others are all from a charity shop....
Next job is to shuffle my shelves as the TBR shelf is already full....

Smangela There is something that feels so good about a book haul though. Especially when it‘s a bargain 😍 7y
Ddzmini Added a couple of books to my tbr list it‘s a never ending list yea love it 😊 7y
squirrelbrain Even more so when it‘s a bargain @Smangela ! Th charity shop isn‘t the cheapest in town, but I just worked it out - (f8 of books for (cc! 7y
squirrelbrain I think joining Litsy has given me some kind of book buying addiction @Ddzmini ! 7y
Ddzmini @squirrelbrain yes me too every time I come on here I‘m looking at another book that I either add to my tbr or I look into buying 😳📚 I‘m going to have to start separating the books I have into the ones I‘ve read and the ones I haven‘t 😝 7y

The photo is of a live flamenco show at our hotel on the last night of our holiday.

This book is a great holiday read. It is accessible historical fiction that goes into great detail about the Spanish Civil War. One of the main characters is a flamenco dancer, and the joy and love of dance are strong themes throughout the book.

I think some of the characters are a bit weak but the story is engaging and I feel I learned something.

Having read the thread I was really looking forward to reading this book but I didn't grab me in the same way I'm afraid. I really struggled with part 1. I just couldn't get into it but once I got to part 2 I really enjoyed it. Again part 3 I struggled with. overall I'm glad I read it as I didn't know anything about the Spanish civil war so I found the actual story line of that very interesting
