A Fever of the Blood
A Fever of the Blood | Oscar De Muriel
16 posts | 7 read | 21 to read
A spellbinding concoction of crime, history and horror - perfect for fans of Sherlock Holmes and Jonathan Creek. New Year's Day, 1889. In Edinburgh's lunatic asylum, a patient escapes as a nurse lays dying. Leading the manhunt are legendary local Detective 'Nine-Nails' McGray and Londoner-in-exile Inspector Ian Frey. Before the murder, the suspect was heard in whispered conversation with a fellow patient - a girl who had been mute for years. What made her suddenly break her silence? And why won't she talk again? Could the rumours about black magic be more than superstition? McGray and Frey track a devious psychopath far beyond their jurisdiction, through the worst blizzard in living memory, into the shadow of Pendle Hill - home of the Lancashire witches - where unimaginable danger awaits... * * * Praise for The Strings of Murder: 'This is wonderful. A brilliant, moving, clever, lyrical book - I loved it. Oscar de Muriel is going to be a name to watch.' Manda Scott 'One of the best debuts so far this year - a brilliant mix of horror, history, and humour. Genuinely riveting with plenty of twists, this will keep you turning the pages. It's clever, occasionally frightening and superbly written - The Strings Of Murder is everything you need in a mystery thriller.' Crime Review

I love this series! While keeping me interested with twists and turns, it also just makes me laugh at times. I had to request that my library obtain a copy (and they bought it within a few days!) plus it has fewer reviews than a lot of popular books so I‘m using it for #underrated for #booked2021. As a side note, I stumbled on this series because of a prompt for #booked2020 and am so glad I did. #litsyatoz #f #seriesread

#BookReport - Finished 2 books this week. Haven‘t gotten as much reading time in as I would like.

I‘m halfway through Nevermoor on audio
I started Anxious People last night. It‘s my second attempt at Backman. I tried Beartown 2 years ago and couldn‘t get into it.

#WeeklyForecast - I have to read Iron Hunt for my last #Booked2020 prompt (bottom of TBR) and it really depends what books I get in from the library to start #WinterGames2020

Cinfhen Two books read is awesome!!! This is definitely a busy time of year 4y

I‘m really enjoying this series. This is the second book and it was so different from the first book. It was great! This one follows the Pendell witches. It has murder, witchcraft, mystery and lots of snow. It will make you cold reading this!

This is a series that should be read in order.

I just managed to finish the last chapter of this audiobook before it got returned, but I completely forgot to post it! The 2nd in the Frey & McGrey series by Oscar de Muriel, a patient escapes from Edinburgh‘s Lunatic asylum after a conversation with a girl who‘s been mute for years, and happens to be McGreys sister. On his trail, they end up in Lancashire, home of the Pendle Witch trials. #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter 11points #PointsTotal-1,908

emmaturi The whole series is great! 5y

Next up in my #Scareathlon playlist is the #audiobook of the 2nd in the McGray&Frey historical crime series. Set in late 1880s Edinburgh, Inspector Frey has been exiled to a town he hates & partnered up with Detective McGray, a man he holds in contempt. Together they investigate the odd crimes that no one else wants, ones touched by the paranormal, in McGrays opinion anyway. They‘re quietly growing on me! #TeamSlaughter 1point #TotalPoints-67

I‘ve borrowed Bk2 in this series as audio on borrowbox. I‘ve never used this app before so I‘m hoping it‘s stable. New Years Day 1889, an inmate of Edinburgh‘s asylum escapes into the snow. Leading the manhunt are local Detective McGrey & Londoner Inspector Frey. They track a devious psychopath through the worst blizzard in memory to Pendle Hill, home of the Lancashire witches. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-31

The title and blurb for this book are way more dramatic than the book actually is. It was a pretty straightforward mystery and it wasn't hard to figure out the plot. Good points for the Odd Couple relationship of the two detectives and the portrayal of the witches, though, as these were nicely done. 3⭐️

#24hourreadathon is over but #litsypartyofone rolls on. I think I'll start a new book. It's due Wednesday so I'd better get going. Time to party like a book nerd! 🤘🤘

JazzFeathers Thanks so much for posting about this book. Sounds right up my ally. Is it a retelling? 7y
Redwritinghood @JazzFeathers I don't think so. I only got up to page 41 last night, but I like it. The action moves along nicely and there's a great buddy dynamic between the two main characters. 7y

All Lord Ambrose could hear of the curse was the number thirteen. But the crowd heard it in its entirety, and the terrified townsfolk began to rush away.
