Transmission | Hari Kunzru
10 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
In Transmission, award-winning writer Hari Kunzru takes an ultra-contemporary turn with the story of an Indian computer programmer whose luxurious fantasies about life in America are shaken when he accepts a California job offer. Lonely and nave, Arjun spends his days as a lowly assistant virus- tester, pining away for his free-spirited colleague Christine. Arjun gets laid off like so many of his Silicon Valley peers, and in an act of desperation to keep his job, he releases a mischievous but destructive virus around the globe that has major unintended consequences. As world order unravels, so does Arjuns sanity, in a rollicking cataclysm that reaches Bollywood and, not so coincidentally, the glamorous star of Arjuns favorite Indian movie.

3⭐️ I really wanted to love this story but I couldn‘t find the right chemistry (maybe it‘s not the right time for me?). The book was written in 2003, so it was timely for a story about cyber crime, pop culture, immigration, and globalization - all are still relevant today 👍🏻

First book completed for #24in48 #24in48readathon I‘m taking a longer break now; the husband is watching anime and it looks interesting

Mehso-so

I'm not a huge fan of what I tend to call the pretentious lit fic tone (which definitely shows my bias lol - there is probably a proper lit crit term, if so, please tell me) as I find it usually too nihilistic. This book crosses too far on that line for it to be a pick for me. Some interesting ideas, characters, and writing, but to me, lacking connection/cohesion. A perfectly fine book, just not my thing. Letter T for #litsyatoz

This is everything I have left to read for #litsyatoz (both tracks). I think I can do it! Ten books left. Two are ebooks, Nevertheless She Persisted, ed. Mindy Klasky, and Shenzheners by Xue Yiwei. I'm over halfway through Transmission already.

#2017Book55
While this novel didn't include the fast-paced action of other novels dealing with cyber crime, it was interesting to learn the motivations of the characters who perpetrate the hacking and virus release.

Some parts that dragged:mostly the parts with Guy. I mean, why did he get to live and we don't even know where Arjun is? That's torture. I'm happy for Leela. I know Arjun just wanted his job and didn't plan for the virus to spread worldwide and be so bad, but I feel like it helped Leela find herself and her happiness.
Arjun. What. The. Hell. I can't even pretend that something happy happened to him because it all just makes me sad! Where is he?!
