We had a great bonus meeting of #ThePoconoBookClub today 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Every other month, we are reading a series of 5 books to help members acquire a more knowledgeable background of the politics, economy, sociology, and history of the US since this is a major election year. This was the first of the 5, and everyone really enjoyed it! I had a delicious grilled cheese-bacon-apple sandwich with sweet potato waffle fries, & chicken barley soup. 😋

InBooksILive That sandwich sounds and looks absolutely delicious! 5y

#Bookhaul 2/2 😁! I‘ve never seen the number and variety of deals like this at any brick-&-mortar bookstore at any one time, it was 😳😱🥳! Wondering if they‘re trying to clear out their 2019 overstock. Whatever it is, if you live near a B&N and have a few bucks to spare, head on over!

Have you read any of these?!

Nikki_E Girl in Translation was really good. 5y
Panic70 I read the Time Keeper and didn‘t give it a rating. Interesting topic! 5y
Scochrane26 When Delia Owens came to my bookstore, she talked about her time as a wildlife specialist & said she had written 2 NF books. I saw them listed in Crawdads but hadn‘t looked them up to see if they‘re available. Let us know if it‘s good. 5y

Mehso-so

Finished this book and am uncertain what I think. The authors central theme is that the only motivation which drives a leader in any political system is maintaining themselves in power and exploiting the position for the maximum possible gains. The only variable is the constraints of the political system in which they operate. Why the ambivalence? Because the author makes a convincing argument, an argument that I truly do not wish to be true.

Laura317 Well, I guess that IS true for most all dictators. Don't most come to power by coup or death of the prior leader (I think of N Korea, Cuba and those sort of countries). 8y
Oblomov26 @Laura317 yep except they argue convincingly that it is also the way that democracy operates, the only difference is the nature and number of individuals that the leader has to keep happy to maintain power 8y
