Lord Loveall, heretofore heirless lord of the sprawling Love Hall, is the richest man in England. He arrives home one morning with a most unusual package - a baby that he presents as the inheritor to the family name and fortune. In honor of his beloved sister, who died young, Loveall names the baby Rose. The household, relieved at the continuation of the Loveall line, ignores the fact that this Rose has a thorn...that she is, in fact, a boy. Rose grows up with the two servant children who are her only friends, blissfully unaware of her own gender, casually hitting boundaries at Love Hall's yearly cricket game and learning to shave even as she continues to wear more and more elaborate dresses. Until, of course, the fateful day when Rose's world comes crashing down around her, and she is banished from Love Hall as an impostor by those who would claim her place as heir.

Mehso-so

This story was written almost 20 years ago. It definitely foreshadows things to come. I‘m not even sure where I got this book, I found it on my bookshelf and thought I‘d give it a try. It wasn‘t bad. I found it confusing at times. Far too much of it was spent during a hallucination or a dream. I also loved parts of it, especially the parts that took place in the old Victorian home, Love Hall.

Pick! For those of you who love a Victorian pastiche with more explicit sex.

Rose, a foundling brought home as the heir at Love Hall, is raised as a girl, but is really a boy. Enter shenanigans of inheritance problems, familial strife, and sexual fluidity. It‘s long one, but it‘s worth reading - fun, has some twists, gets puzzling and philosophical. (The middle got a little weird.) Enjoyed it!

This book has been on my shelf for a while. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Still haven‘t read it. I figure I‘ll get to it some day. 😬😬 The price sticker tore the cover and I find that super annoying!! Also, this tea was disgusting. It was some kind of berry nonsense.. I‘ll stick with earl grey.

Not a huge month for me, but October is the height of cross country season. With both kids running, I have been to a lot of meets and done too much driving! Also, I'm 470 pages into The Mysteries of Udolpho, so next month will be padded!! 🤣😂

A 500-page romp in early 19th century England, featuring a boy foundling raised as a girl heir. Wordplay, goofiness, rich snobs, books, and intrigue all come together--and it wraps up neatly at the end. I kind of feel like I need to read it again to catch the details in the appendix! #192019 #2005

Zelma That has been on my TBR for possibly a decade. I really need to get to it. 7y

Because I need to be reading another book. My husband picked this up at the library and asked me to read it. The author is aka the musician John Wesley Harding. The first 25 pages are good!

the_alternate_ending_library Yes... I picked up this one as well 🤗 7y
monkeygirlsmama I had this one on my physical stacks before we moved. ☹️ 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled This sounds like a fun book! Stacked! I love when Littens introduce me to books I might never have discovered on my own. Thanks! 7y

This gender-switching , Victorian-era romp is still TBR. Has anyone read it?

The #readjanuary prompt today is a book published in the 2000s. I read this back in '06 and I count it as one of my favorite books. I looked it up on Goodreads and was surprised by the negative reviews. Perhaps a reread is in order a decade on. The author even recorded an album based on this book, and a couple of the songs still pop up in my iTunes playlist.

Dan_SpiderCrafts I hadn't yet heard of this book. It does have me curious for a library look to read it. Neat cover art in your photo! 8y
candyflossramparts @AlobelThee Hopefully your library has it! I can certainly see why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it. 8y
