The Winter Queen | Boris Akunin

Moscow, May 1876: What would cause a talented young student from a wealthy family to shoot himself in front of a promenading public in the Alexander Gardens? Decadence and boredom, most likely, is what the commander of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Moscow Police thinks, but still he finds it curious enough to send the newest member of the division, Erast Fandorin, a young man of irresistible charm, to the Alexander Gardens precinct for more information. Fandorin is not satisfied with the conclusion that this is an open-and-shut case, nor with the preliminary detective work the precinct has doneand for good reason: The bizarre and tragic suicide is soon connected to a clear case of murder, witnessed firsthand by Fandorin. There are many unresolved questions. Why, for instance, have both victims left their fortunes to an orphanage run by the English Lady Astair? And who is the beautiful A.B., whose signed photograph is found in the apparent suicides apartment? Relying on his keen intuition, the eager sleuth plunges into an investigation that leads him across Europe, landing him at the deadly center of a terrorist conspiracy of worldwide proportions. In this thrilling mystery that brings nineteenth-century Russia to vivid life, Akunin has created one of the most eagerly anticipated novels in years. From the Hardcover edition.

Pickpick

This was a pick due to the majority of the story, not the horrific ending. A noir mystery told with the dark humor and embedded cynicism of the Russian author. The twists and turns were steep.

Day 188.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

A short little historical mystery set in Russia. It was an interesting story but quite confusing and slow at first, I think at least partly because it wasn‘t really holding my attention on audio. I did quite like the main character, though he seemed quite dense at some points despite everyone constantly commenting on how bright he was. My reading partner was not at all impressed lol #catsoflitsy

Set in late 19th century Moscow, St. Petersburg and London, this brief but captivating novel relates the efforts of a young police detective, Erast Fandorin, to uncover the truth about a mysterious death. Fandorin is an intrepid and persistent investigator, willing to take risks and go undercover, trusting his sharp mind and, frequently, good luck, to save him. I will definitely seek out the rest of the books in this series.

If you want to try a new historical mystery series, i highly recommend Akunin's Fandorin series. Russia pre revolution. It's really, really good.

Monday are usually go go go type of days for me. I really try to take a moment if only 15 minutes to escape. A good historical mystery does it for me. Akunin's series takes me away and helps get through Monday. #survivingdecember
