The Whale
The Whale: In Search of the Giants of the Sea | Philip Hoare
11 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
From his childhood fascination with the gigantic Natural History Museum model of a blue whale, to his abiding love of Moby-Dick, to his adult encounters with the living animals in the Atlantic Ocean, the acclaimed writer Philip Hoare has been obsessed with whales. The Whale is his unforgettable and moving attempt to explain why these strange and beautiful animals exert such a powerful hold on our imagination.

Only a bit about whales themselves, this book is more about whaling, Moby Dick, and Herman Melville. Hoare has a meandering style that won‘t work for everyone and he certainly doesn‘t shy away from describing the gore of butchering whales, but I like how he writes. I wanted a bit more about the whales themselves, but did still like this.

Interesting facts, found the jumping between time and location confusing at times.

Since I read fiction, nonfiction, ya, and graphic novels, I cheated and picked 10 from each category so I didn't have to narrow down too much. Choosing these was like picking which pet or kid I love more...😂

Here's my #Top10oftheDecade #NonfictionEdition.

Any friends who have not already done this, I'd love to see your picks.

Scochrane26 I didn‘t put the Mister Rogers bio on my list, but I loved it. 5y
Addison_Reads @Scochrane26 I still want to go watch the Tom Hanks movie too. Have you seen it? 5y
Scochrane26 @Addison_Reads Yes, I saw it during thanksgiving. It‘s really good but not a bio exactly. The main focus is on a reporter who interviewed mister Rogers & developed a friendship. It had some powerful moments, & Tom Hanks is amazing. 5y
Crazeedi @Addison_Reads just saw the movie with my girls, my youngest and I had a daily routine of Mr Rogers when she was little. We loved it, lots of good cry moments 5y

Loved this book. A great companion piece for anyone who has read Moby Dick as well as a great meditation on whales and our history with them. A very moving and lovely book.

My self-imposed obligatory whale read of the year (because I ❤️🐋🐳!) This book was more about whaling than I expected, but overall one of the more well-rounded whaling books I‘ve read. Moby Dick is very clearly Philip Hoare‘s muse and following it in structure. This means that, not only is whaling addressed, but also an admiration of the whales themselves. It‘s definitely not a scholarly or academic book, though.

I love non-fiction, but I think I'm getting a bit of non-fiction fatigue. I'm really struggling to finish the final 100 pages of this one. Definitely queuing up a few great novels to read next.

The history of the Whale....often violent and sad. This book from The Life Sciences section is full of beautiful illustrations and sketches, alongside the story of this majestic animal 🗺🐋. #whale #animalkingdom #lifescience #history
